Satnav Radio issue

Hi, my radio/satnav cuts in and out after about 1/2 an hour. And yesterday it shutdown the
whole screen display, when we came back after a while it was working again.Is this a common unit problem?
Is it possible to upgrade with a later version unit?

Before you even think about the expensive pieces: How old is your battery?

unless things have changed, When the car is running, all the accessories are running off of the alternator, and to check to see if the alternator is working, when the car is running, with a Digital Volt Ohm meter, put the red lead on the batt positive terminal and the black on a ground and you should read 14.7 volts, or what ever the output of the alternator is. This should have nothing to do with the battery

Aging batteries are well-known to trigger all sorts of electronic mayhem on late-model BMWs. Ruling out a tired battery is a worthwhile first step when diagnosing any bizarre behavior of this sort.
