You might have a thermostat that is sticking. Is this the 1st time it's done this?
I'd get this problem looked at right away. The M54 allum engine don't survive
well at all when temps go in the red.

When you allow the car to warm up, are you driving it or is it sitting at idle? If driving, then check the tstat. If sitting at idle, more probably the fan clutch. However, neither explains why the problem will cease after warmup. How many miles on the car? If over 100K, you need to replace your entire cooling system. Every part is subject to random failure after 100K.

If the temp gauge is in the red, and you turn it off and right back on without waiting and the gauge is basically back at the middle, you have an electrical issue, not a cooling system issue.

Thanks guys for the respond the car has 169000 km i bought it in october last year the car don't have no history on the car other than it had a rear end colision, other than that the car works fine E36 Phantom i think you are right on this only happen sometimes not all the time.
After the car warm up and i drove off 2-5 mins temp goes to the red i will pull over shut the car off and back on right away and the temp gauge goes to normal and it is fine from then on.
