Intermittent remote locking/unlocking - help, please!

I have a 2002 530i with only 1 key. The remote functions on the remote work intermittently. The key works fine in the door lock.

I've done a bunch of searching and reading... Fuse 53 is OK, fuel door actuator is working fine (not blowing fuse, disconnected makes no difference).

I am now looking at the antenna amplifier, but am a little confused. Is the amplifier for the remote the driver's side one or passenger side? Is there a difference between the two of them? How do I know if I have the Diversity system (without ripping apart the car)? What's the correct part number for the correct amplifier?

Any help gratefully accepted.

Is it just the driver door lock failing to move when you push the button once or is it all locks failing to move when you push the button twice? If the former, the problem may be your lock actuator. Do a search for this issue. There's a DIY for it.

All door locks, trunk lock and gas door work fine with either the inside button or the key in the door lock.

The problem is using the key remote to unlock/lock the doors. That works intermittently.

Then your key may be dead.

Yes, it may, but it works great for as few days in a row, then not at all for a few days...

I assume your car is a 99 528. Your key has a battery in it and it sounds like the battery is just about dead. You need to replace it by taking the 2 small screws out of the back, popping out the small rectangular piece with a small screw driver and taking the back off the key.

Sometimes the contacts within the key get dirty. If you have the back off the key, you can pop out the entire electrical part and you will see where the buttons on the face of the key contact electrical 'switches' on the electrical part through a piece of molded plastic. Clean all these contacts with Q-tip and electrical cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Then put everything back together with the new battery and see how your key performs.

Thanks - it's a 2002 530i with diamond (sealed) key.

Just go to the dealer and they can tell you the condition of the key. Just be forewarned: a new key is about $150 nowadays.

So I cut open the key, replaced the battery. Key still locks and unlocks the doors with key in lock, still starts engine.

Tried to reinitialize (get in car, close and lock doors, put key in ignition, turn to position 1, take out key, press and hold unlock button, press lock button 3 times, wait for door locks to cycle. Door locks did not cycle.

Hit the trunk unlock button, trunk unlocked. Lock and unlock (for doors) did not work.

Any thoughts?
