Wheel/Tire swap...likely to happen?

I'm looking at a 2005 330Ci that comes with the 2-piece BMW premium billet wheels (staggered rims 18 x 8 inch frt, 18x9 inch rear).

Nice setup, but this is a car for my wife, and she would never, ever make use of the benefits of those wheels and the tires they run, and would also never, ever consider paying the amount of money required to put new tires on those wheels in the future.

So I'm thinking that if the car is a go in other respects, what's the likelihood I could arrange a swap w/someone - trade the wheels/tires on the car for standard 3-series wheels/tires setup, + some cash.

Seem likely? We're in SoCal so I'd expect the general supply of 3-series owners to be big...only issue would be getting to the same location/garage to do the switch, once I find someone interested.

Does this seem a likely event, or are failed attempts at wheel/tire swaps legend around here? Are these wheels in demand...they look very cool and appear to be "like new."

Alternative would be to simply put the wheels/tires up for sale and purchase replacements, but the potential simplicity of a quick swap is appealing...

Thanks for any feedback.

Here`s a scenario for ya:

Those wheels *may* or *may not* be OEM-issue....authentic BMW wheels will have the Roundel embossed on the wheel, along with some ID info.

There is no "one size fits all" deal, even with genuine BMW wheels....each chassis platform has it`s own fitment requirements.

Potential buyers (if they have half a brain) will want to know what the offset(s) and Hub Bore Diameter are, as these are critical to a proper fitment.

All the veterans on this forum have seen rolling abortions where the wrong wheels were mounted to the wrong platfom....not a pretty story. It pays to know what you`re buying *before* laying down any money. If you have any doubts, post the wheel info here and we will help you along.

Since changing out the wheels is not an urgent priority, I say drive it as is for a few months while shopping for replacements on Craigslist, this site's classifieds, etc. Find the stock 17" wheels you do want, buy 'em, put tires on 'em, then sell your current wheels the same way you bought the stock wheels. Enjoy.

Thanks...they are BMW wheels, ordered w/the car when purchased. This is what comes from the VIN decode:

- BMW Composite wheel, M double spoke 71

Also included a pic.

I think the idea of staying w/them for a while might have to be how it goes...wife will hate paying for wheels/tires in advance of selling the ones on the car.

Style 71s are *nice* ! And you don`t see them every time you turn around, so they tend to make your car feel a bit "special". I would think twice about getting rid of them....

I know...even my wife noticed them. She *never* notices wheels, and she immediately said that they were very cool when she saw the car.

Problem is, I did a quick check and it looks like tires are going to run 300+ each, and she is just not the kind of person who will spend that money on tires, more like max 200 or less, and strongly prefers less.

If we can't switch 'em, ironically, those wheels will most likely be a deal breaker for her.

Her car, her money...I just married her, it's not like I can control her. ;-)

No no no, my boy ! No need to spend that kinda dough on new rubber....you can get excellent performers like the Hankook Ventus V12 for around $750 a set in that staggered size....

That is exactly what I run and they are great street performance tires. Awesome value! I will keep buying as long as I can.

That's my favorite wheel on the e46. I'll trade you my 17 inch sport package wheels. They have Michelin PS2s with 2000 miles on them.
