How Do I DIY on The Driver's Side Lock Button?

Just took delivery of a Red 2011 X5 5.0. Super clean in/out but someone got hungry and chewed off the Driver's Side Lock Button. It's more of an annoyance but it looks pretty bad. The Stealer wants $20 for the part and $110 to install it - wow! I thought I saw some instructions for DIY on this a while back. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm 99% sure that you can't just twist/pull of the button and replace it. I believe the button has a rod that is fixed to it that runs down the inside of the door to the locking mechanism.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think the original one got damaged by someone trying to pull it up to unlock the car. Since the surface is slippery and not intended to be grabbed to pull up, they tried to grab it with something sharp. Teeth? Maybe!

Anyways, doesn't the original one come off by turning like a bolt?

Nope. The original appears to have the rod and button as one piece. I guess I can try to remove it with pliers and see but I don't want to mess something up further.

Yeah there is a rod in there. I saw it before.
(First buy the replacement part to see what they give you. Then look for the "remove door panel/trim" instructions or video; the same instructions people use to swap door speakers, to get to that door lock piece.) Good wishes to you....

All info needed is here (undee repair manual - e70 - trim):

Should take 5 min to remove door trim etc.

I'm pretty new at this. Not sure which door trim instructions I need to follow. It's the Driver's side Front door.

Just got back from the other Stealer (the one that isn't known to steal as much). They're going to cover this under warranty and when we went to order the parts they claim all that's needed is the little $1.87 button that is pictured above in my post. I asked if they were sure they didn't need the operating rod and they said "no, based on your VIN, the button is removable and is all that's required". So, I hope to get it fixed at my next appointment.
