Engine click; doesn't start. ('97 BMW 740 iL)?

I bought this car for cheap just to try to learn some car stuff. I wanna try to fix it. When I try to start the car, the engine makes clicking noises and doesn't start at all. The lights and stuff all come on. It just doesn't start. What would be some good ways to try an fix this car?

Battery is dead charge it.

Yes battery first. If you still get the clicking with a good battery, then starter solenoid is next. The contacts in this can become pitted/corroded/dirty, and the click is the solenoid pulling in, but current is not passed to the starter
