Thought this great article on a BMW surviving a rear end collision from a runaway gravel truck would help you appreciate how safe and well built our cars are. Enjoy!

Terrible accident. They were very fortunate. It does not look like there is much left of the BMW.

Wow. Heartbreaking to see that little girl wheeled away, though it seems she will be fine. Horrible experience. Some of the photos clearly remind us how firefighters put their life on the line to save someone else's. Very fortunate, as beden said already. 99/100 times this ends even worse than it has.

The mom and her 2 daughters were un-harmed, Thank God! The girl being wheeled away is a 10 year old and the other daughter was a 10-month old that slept through the whole thing in her rear facing car seat behind her mom's driver seat. Regardless to what people say, I'll take the 1% that everybody comes out safe; gives a better appreciation with the safety the engineers put into our BMWs.

Well, that ten year old certainly appears harmed. A helo evac suggests that she was not medically stable. And the car looks like Megatron's hockey puck. Certainly hope things turn out ok for the young girl.

Sadly, they don't make them like this anymore - the car in that article is an E46.

This is the most shocking accident I've seen on a video. I was seriously considering getting rid of my Tahoe that I drive back and forth on I-95 between PA & FL after seeing this.

But I bet that you have the correct tires for the road conditions. That vehicle certainly didn't.

Yep, I remember that Tahoe demolition. That's scary.

Here's the E9x M3 in Taiwan or HK that flipped

Mine has new tires and also dedicated 4 wheel drive and Auto AWD. That SUV may only have had rear wheel drive. But, SUVs are top heavy. I can see how one could lose control getting startled and swerving too quickly and severely. I had a deer jump out in front of my car from behind dense trees at the edge of an overpass on I-95N somewhere in N Carolina. I was doing about 70 MPH. Somehow, I swerved left just at the right angle, and in control. The deer missed me. I still have no idea how I pulled that one off?

The current crash/safety standards, met or exceeded by the F30 etc., are far more stringent than they were for the introduction of the E46, so your statement is not accurate.

Yeah, I had one of the original Nissan Pathfinders and had to swerve around a truck. The Pathfinder nearly flipped. The handling characteristics of the thing made it a rolling death trap so I sold it to my boss

That was my first and last SUV (although just about any new 'ute would handle much better than the PF)

Is this based on fact or fictions?

2008 E90 earned all 4 or 5 stars, as well as 4 or 5 stars from Euro NCAP.

2013 F30 earned all 5 stars aside from front-drive which is 4 stars. NHSTA overall is 5 stars. Euro NCAP is 5 stars overall.

In comparison, E46 had all 4 or 5 stars from NHSTA but 3 stars for side impact front due to a concern of intrusion of panels.

Of all of them, it appears the ranking in terms of safety would be:

F30
E90
E46

I'd be surprised if a 2 generation newer car is less safe. That's just inexcusable...

I'm tired of truck drivers thinking they are driving a car. They pass each other at 80 mph+ on the left lane and tailgate cars at highway speeds. This one had the end he deserved.

And people who buy SUVs thinking it's safer will be in for a big surprise.
