Ok DAMNIT...

How do I enable the ability to allow my car to move in reverse or drive, while the drivers door is open????
I park as close to medians and curbs as possible and I need to see how close to get while my door is open. Grrrrr!!!

My car bogs down and displays an error message about door open....

I will check in manual and/or call my SA.

Thanks for checking though. Now I know something is wrong.

So it told me to "secure the car against rolling!"

If you are in fact able to do this Richard, what model and tear is your car? Because I just did a quick search and even newer 5 Series do this!

Was it so, that the seat belt must be engaged?

Just read THIS:
Quote:
SOFT CLOSE option will cause this issue.

all BMW's with soft close DOOR cant drive while door is open
I get the whole "safety issue" but this is annoying as frack! I rely on doing this regularly to park as close to curbs as possible.

AND... In the unlikely and unfortunate event someone attempts to carjack you by opening your door, you will NOT be able to drive off or over their ass!

Potential workaround - use the dipped mirror when hitting reverse gear. That will mean you need to reverse into the spots and park against the pax side though.

Is there a way to "code" the ability to drive the car (in drive or in reverse) from a standstill / stop with the door open (i.e.: to deactivate the "secure the vehicle against rolls" warning / mechanism)?

I get close to the curbs too but learn your back up camera better and with that and your mirrors, you should not need to open the door!

Or, you could just get those things that resemble antennaes attached to the lower edges of your fenders!

I just went out and tried it again. I can drive forward and reverse with the door open. I did notice that when I took my seat belt off, the car would not move. Have you tried it with your seat belt on? I have a 2012 750Li xDrive car.

Sounds silly but why not just back in then? I don't have the side view cameras, and occasionally when I encounter a tight space, I just backup.

A lot easier in the short base felt like I was docking a yacht in my old LWB.

You can just get the top view cameras retrofitted, or better yet try switching the mirror adjustment knob to drivers side so mirrors dip.

I have the soft close and I can back up while the door is open if seat belt is fastened or auto hold is active.

That's all fine and dandy for you guys rolling "stock" wheels.

I'm used to rolling aftermarket $$$ wheels (arrived today as a matter of fact) and I trust my eyes physically seeing obstacles vs a camera. I literally park an inch or so from the curb as to give folks next to me plenty of space.

I do appreciate the feedback but it is still silly that this ability is defeated on these cars.

Preach to the choir. (paid over 8k for my current set) I always trust the camera, "even in the land where 1 series is considered a luxury car and is large by Turkish standards". Have yet to scratch mine (knock on wood.)

Don't laugh, but the primary motivation for me to trade my pristine, low mileage 2006 750Li for a new 2011 750 XLi was to get the "Top Down" camera package!
It makes parking a breeze.
That said, I find there are times when I just want to move the car a few feet (primarily when cleaning & detailing) that I find the inability to move the car while the door is open annoying.

Maybe I'm not utilizing the camera pkg to it's full potential... Someone detail to me how you would go about parking within an inch to a curb either side of you while also backing into a spot that has a obstacle in back of you???

I would like "Top Down" cameras too (I have the 2010 Camera Pkg), Rajeek said it was $2200 as a retrofit and not a DIY. I don't even know who could do it in my area, Chicago?

Probably not worth it?

As mentioned above you need the top view camera option not offered in 09 or even in 2010 from what I recall. Can be retrofitted like I did. Not cheap but damn effective to get that 1" you are looking for.

It may be possible to deactivate this via coding. I read that the setting FH_TUER_AUF_STOP_MAUT will disable this (at least on a 2012)...

I personally think the top-down cameras are best for that, provided you have them of course
