3rd party extended warranty, should I?
My friend who owns a dealership said he can get me 3yr/36,000mi bumper to bumper warranty for my 08 335i for $1700 and Im thinking about doing it since it has 78k miles. It is a 3rd party warranty company and I cant remember who but he wouldnt recommend this company to me if he wasn't happy using them at his dealership.
You guys think its worth it? |

Very much depends on the reputation of the company recommended...

Read the fine print. I once, years ago, bought a warranty where it said "we will use like parts"...turned out when it came time to fix things "like" parts meant BROKEN parts. So they would get it at the junkyard, even if it was broken!
If a BMW dealership uses it, and the owner is your friend, I would be OK with it - especially if you get it fixed there. But it's always good to read it first

Your friend does - he's paid. However, if you wish to take Internet forum advice as your decision making guide, do NOT read the contract you'll sign, and even if you do, do NOT investigate the meaning of anything you don't understand or don't know the case law result of. Instead, ask the salesman what it means. Take someone else's advice, especially if you don't know whether their story is true or not. Just sign. Then, you'll feel better. Your life is bliss! . If it were me I would just open a savings account for maintenance and stash around 3000 In it....

i got a third party warranty for my '08 335xi from warranty direct and 1) got my moneys worth and then some and 2) was very please with the ease of making claims. The slight caveat to #2 is that if the repair exceed a certain threshold, they had to send an inspector to the car to authorize the repair. In two cases, this extended the duration that my car was in the shop by a couple days, but I always got loaners at my dealer so it wasn't a big deal. They never turned down a claim and the only money I ever paid out of pocket was the deductible.

great deal on 7yr/100k gold warranty
not sure if this is useful to anyone, but I was just looking for an extended warranty myself as my '09 335i just hit 49,600. Looked at 3rd party stuff, and ALL of the contracts for the best plans had so much open language ("existing conditions") that just didn't sit right with me. Started looking for good deals on BMW warranties. My local (Dallas) BMW dealership told me $3900/non-negotiable for 7yr/100k. Called a few out of state places and they ALL negotiated on it. Best deal I got was from Pacific BMW in Glendale, CA. Dan Dutton was an AWESOME finance manager and scored me a deal at $2840. Should look into spending just a bit more to get that BMW backing peace of mind. Plus you don't have to worry about finding a ride while your car's in the shop!
