Car Burning Oil

Hi I have an E46 2003 53 BMW 316i SE Auto 1.8 Litre with the N42 engine. The car seems to be burning an excessive amount of oil. Approx 1 litre per week. Is there any known issues with this enginne? I have a receipt when I bought the car for a new oil seperator and hoses so this has already been replaced. Does anyone have any other ideas why the car is burning oil? it has only done 45000 miles. Thanks

No oil leaks of any kind?. The only other cause is your piston rings are getting old.

I will check for oil leaks tonight. where is the most likely place to find an oil leak on this engine?

Is worn piston rings possible at 45000 miles? surely they would last longer than this?

I am not an expert but would a blown head gasket cause burning of oil?

I noticed yesterday that when stuck in traffic there was blue smoke comming from the exhaust? there is no overheating or anything else going on.

Blue smoke= burning oil. Most likely due to bad rings or valves. Its bad either way.

Were oil changes done on time with quality oil? Make sure your dipstick drain for the oil separator runs clear. (if it works like the I6 engines and drains into the dipstick tube near the bottom) If that clogged, it won't matter if you have a new oil separator or not. Cold weather and short trips make it worse so it is possible this could be your issue even at 45000. I'd check this out before looking into anything more serious. Pull the hose off the dipstick shunt and if a lot of oil comes out, there's your problem. A few drops of oil would be normal.

The above happened to me. I installed a new CVV and hoses and forgot to clean out the dipstick tube. MY car burned 1qt every 400-500 miles, no smoke, but burned a lot of oil. I ran a bottle of Lubro Moly Pro Engine FLush through it before my last oil change and it cleaned the dipstick tube and now I am back to my normal useage of 1qt per 1300 miles or so.
