Trans in Failsafe Mode and Codes P0102 and P0971 Showing

I have not been able to find anything about this by searching past posts on the forum, so please pardon me if I have missed it.

My 2002 525i with 145,000 miles developed alternator problems (due to leaking brake fluid reservoir) a few weeks ago and then started intermittently going into failsafe mode. I replaced the alternator (and brake fluid reservoir and hoses), but the vehicle stays in failsafe mode all the time now. My battery is fairly new and very strong, so no problem there.

The OBD II codes P0102 and P0971 are coming up on my code reader. I took the MAF sensor out and sprayed it with electronics cleaner fluid. It looks ok, and the connection looks ok.

Any ideas on what to check now? Thanks for any help here!

The Bently Manual doesn't show a 900 series of codes under the Powertrain (P) designator. At least i couldn't find it. But the point of my response is that I don't think that is your brake fluid reservoir over your alternator. It is your power steering reservoir so please don't put brake fluid in it.

D'OH!!! Sorry about that. Too much on my mind I guess. I most assuredly meant the power steering reservoir.

From the OBD II Codes listed elsewhere on this forum:

P0102 = MAF or VAF A Circuit Low Input

P0971 = Pressure Control Solenoid "C" Control Circuit High
