Bimmer "stuck" at the VDC

My car got off the boat early in January, sailed through customs and went into the VDC...where it has stayed for three weeks now. Last week, my CA noticed that my car had been noted as "damaged" and that explained the delay.

I've been told by my ever patient CA (Adrian of the board sponsor party) that it is not unusual for cars to spend as much as a month in the VDC even for minor damage.

Curious of what others have experienced.

It gernerally depends upon parts availability. 3 weeks is a long time in limbo; I'd call BMWNA's ED department or have Adrian contact them for more details. I would not interpret the lengthy delay due to major damage. The VDC's are usually very transparent in their actions once the car is really in their hands (cleared customs, cleared US AG Inspection, ...)

There have been cases where cars have been detained at the VPC for as many as 8-10 weeks, sometimes for reasons other than damage, sometimes for emissions/customs issues. Adrian should be able to find out what the real story is concerning your car. If it is damage I would not worry about it as the folks at the VDC are real pros when it comes to repairing damage, they do a first class job.

Ours was at the VDC for a longer than usual time due to several factors. It was unloaded on Wednesday, 6/29, just before the Independence Day Holiday weekend. In 2011 July 4 fell on a Monday but for some reason US Customs also had Tuesday, July 5 as a holiday which was an additional one day delay. On Thursday, July 7, a fire sprinkler failed at the VDC and the facility was evacuated for a day. Our RF wheel had to be replaced due to curb rash and it took them about 10 days to get a new wheel and tire. Bottom line, it was three weeks from ship unload to redelivery, but not as long as you've experienced.

My sympathies for the delay. I have learned that the VDC is a black hole, and no one I spoke to from my CA to the BMW ED Dept. ever once gave me an accurate status or estimate, but I did get several wildly inaccurate or optimistic time estimates. The only good news I got was the call from our CA saying that the car had arrived at the dealership with absolutely no advance notice that it was even put on a truck.

That really stinks. I had my first ED car get held up for several weeks at the VDC around the 4th of July without any explanation. Hopefully, whatever was damaged gets fixed up in a hurry.

I called BMW ED this morning and was informed that the holdup is caused by a very minor scratch on the front bumper. The bumper is currently in the paint shop.

She committed to providing me an update tomorrow as to why a minor scratch was taking so long and a detailed breakdown of the remaining steps to get the car on a truck.

So...positive that it is only minor damage. Negative that it takes them quite a while to fix stuff. Also good confirmation that Adrian really does know what he's talking about. (not that anyone here needed it)

You do know that your car is not the only one in the paintshop with scuffs and scratches right? Quite afew cars are "corected" at the VPC from transportation.
Congrats on the new ride nonetheless

My car had the same issue in 2007. It got stuck at the VDC because of "minor damage to the bumper" and it took 5 weeks before I could pick up the car at my local dealer. But the most critical part was that when I got the car, it was in perfect order and one would never have guessed that it had had any problems. I hope you get your car sooner than I did.

My car was at the VDC for a month, from November 27 to December 27. The reason I was given was that they didn't have the damaged rim/tire in stock. My redelivery took 10 weeks instead of the estimated 6 to 8 weeks and I was compensated by BMW ED for the extra time.
Good luck and PM me if you need more details.
