Could there be more issues besides the physical bolt-on replacement of an automatic transmission with a manual transmission and its linkage?
Is the automatic transmission electronically controlled with a TCU? Does the automatic transmission require a different ECU than the manual transmission? Does the automatic transmission need changes to the radiator for fluid cooling? |

The engine will bolt right up, no problem there. Keep the DME that was originally in the Z3, don't use the 318 DME. I'd be tempted to swap as much of the 318 engine harness as possible right up to the DME connector - providing the DME system is the same (The P/N is the same right? and if not exactly the same at least the same Motronic version right? Sometimes the DME P/N changes are physical changes to the case not the guts) That link to the Pelican Parts site in the earlier post is helpful for determining software/hardware versions among the various E36 electronics. I admire your determination, I hope this works out well for you. Jumping into a basket case BMW is a tough way to learn the car.

You're pulling an engine outdoors, in Michigan, in January? That's pretty hardcore.
