Hazards on hard braking

I learned about a year ago that if you press hard on brakes, I mean hard!!, the hazards turns on automatically, today I had to press hard on brakes but I could not see the hazards on, is there any coding required?, I tried this myself on a BMW roadshow and they dealer told me that this is standard feature...
