01 540i 6spd sluggish!!

I am thinking of buying this car and the guy said that the car gets sluggish every time the instrument cluster starts to act up. What could this be?!

Need more info. Its like me saying 'i got check engine light, what do i need to replace!?' What he means by slugish? does it have check engine light on? Does it happen warm or cold? Idle or moving? etc.

Working on getting those answers now

Better yet go drive the car yourself.... I know it's a novel idea, but you don't want to buy a set of problems that will deplete your wallet faster than a hooker needing a crack fix. And these dang cars will do just that if not cared for.

If your serious about the car, the guy should let you take it to an Indy mechanic for prebuy inspection, and have them comb thru it. Maybe while your driving it, it will start to act up and you will be better Equipped to inform the mechanic exactly what it's doing.

Report back here with what you find and maybe the collective knowledge on the board can send you down a less deep rabbit hole.

More than likely its the grounds connection. Brown wires behind the airbox on the firewall. Does your Tach act up too?

Very interested to hear the outcome. I have an '01 540 and love it. Anything I can avoid means I get to keep it longer.
