Fan Clutch Behavior?

I recently had the cooling system overhauled on my 2000 528 and it included a new fan clutch. It is a genuine BMW part, but I'm a bit perplexed by its behavior.

On a cold start the clutch sounds disengaged and the engine sounds normal, and accelerates normally. However after a little bit of driving, it sounds like the clutch has completely stuck on - I hear a roar coming from that area and the engine is clearly sapped on power. This continues for the remainder of the drive until I turn the car off and let it sit for a while, at which point the cycle described begins again.

My question: do I have a defective fan clutch that I should send back on warranty or is this normal? The reason I don't know is that I bought the car in terrible shape and put a ton of work into it to get it running and performing well and I'm not sure what it should sound like under normal conditions (I no longer have faults or warning lights on the dash and the engine is idling and running beautifully).

The fan may be on because it is .... well hot. What temps are you getting when it is on? When you say "cooling system overhauled" what does this mean ? Did you change the rad? I cannot count the amount of rads i have changed that have appeared "good" but in fact were blocked. What did you change?

There have been reports that newly-supplied fan clutches are more aggressive than those of old.

Fan Clutch Behavior?

Put your old fan clutch back on and return the new one.

I get zero roar from my original unit and never have since new.

Hard to think about how your fan is sapping power ..... Noisy yes, but feeling a power change, no.

I agree, except one issue. The previous owner had an aftermarket brandless fan clutch and it was 100% stuck on before I changed it. I'm pretty sure I would have a dent in the hood by now had I not changed it.

Thanks - ill see if I can get it swapped either way, it's quite loud and annoying.

my new clutch was very loud when first installed and after some months of use it has gotten much quieter.

Con.P: I sent the clutch back on warranty and replaced it and its back to normal now. Gas mileage also improved greatly after the change. There might be a batch of bad fan clutches that went out so you might want to swap it out again.

I really dont understand how this part supplier is getting away with this if i had taken my car to a bmw workshop and gotten in my car and heard my car sounding like a semi-trailer i wouldnt have taken my car till it was fixed. But as i did the job myself im just worried the company may say something about warranty.

I see - yes my e39 sounded like a semi when I bought it, and then changed the clutch and was less loud but still loud, then changed it again and now I can finally hear the engine over the fan.
