So much to learn... Don't try to drive away with door ajar

Could not for the life of me figure out why my 2 week new (to me) X5 was slamming itself into Park every time I tried to pull away after getting in one day. It would just say to "Stabilize Vehicle from Rolling"... nothing else, then go from Drive to Park by itself. This was after having a "Parking Brake Malfunction" warning earlier in the day, for no reason.

Didn't realize that the drivers door didn't close all the way... and there was no "Door Ajar" warning at all, like my E46 does, so NO CLUE the door was open until I noticed the dome light was on.

What a ridiculous thing for a car to do when the door is ajar, not to warn for that, when it goes bat crap happy to warn you of everything else on earth.

Lesson learned.

I think the older iDrive gives more useful information before slamming the brakes.

You can still drive away if you push the accelerator a little harder. It sorta overrides the "slam the brake" function, and you are able to drive away.
At least that prevents your car from being hijacked.

Yup, this was a new safety feature BMW added once they went to the joystick gear shifter a couple years back.

There was a video posted in Youtube showing a woman that did not leave her Mercedes in park after exiting the car. The car slid away since it was on an incline. Fortunately, she did not get injured. I am sure that feature is there to prevent stuff like this from happening. In her case, I am sure she wished the Mercedes has that feature.

Note, I saw the post on Autoblog. I can't find the link anymore.

What if you are traveling 70 mph, and you open the door?

Would the BMW slam the brakes?
