98 328i Convertible Parts help?

98 328ic Triple Black 104k, big wheels, nice rims, No rust, great shine.. Great condition (really) except for the fully automatic convertible. The current top is tight and dry, but they say I need new motors and a new frame, ragtop and headliner. The whole shebang.

My options - #1 if all factory new $8900 or #2 if new rag, headliner and used motors $8100 or #3 if aftermarket rag, headliner and used motors $5100.

Man..I bought the car for $4800 @94k miles 3 summers ago and put $1200 in it then to get it to great condition (nothing since). If I put another $5100 into it is it going to be worth the $11k? Its a fun car..garaged all winter, but but but..I'm at that point. Do I fix it or cut my loses and sell it for a song. sigh...

I'm told a better/cheaper option is to find a "good" used frame and ragtop with decent suspension straps. My local BMW guy has been searching since August with no luck (or trust in what he saw in pictures from shops he works with in Texas).

Any ideas on where to find a "good" used frame (with window and lively suspension straps)and a black ragtop in good shape ? I'm sick about having to let it go for peanuts, knowing how well it sounds and good it looks otherwise.

I'd keep looking for better cost options on the top. I got my top replaced last year with an aftermarket top which included the tension straps, etc. installed for $2,700. I'd also question all the motors needing replacement. The flex shafts from the motor to the front latches tend to fail on the full auto tops but the top and storage compartment motor are pretty hardy. Unless something fell on your car like a big tree limb or something I don't know why the frame would need to be replaced.
All that being said, if you keep an eye out on Craig's list or the for sale forums you can pick up a hard top for $2K or so.

I'm not being optimistic, just realistic. I've got a vert and I've had the top replaced so I have actual cost for the job. For the $8,100 your local shop quoted you could buy another E36 vert with a working top, transfer all the parts, sell off the remaining major parts of the car and maybe break even or just out a few $$ out of pocket.
