VANOS Solenoid Failure

This happened to my car 2.5 years ago at 25,000km (or about 15,000 miles).. 320i

Costed me $1700 to repair

My friend's 2010 E90 car had the same problem yesterday and he was quoted $1600 to repair

Dealer said this is a common problem ?

Is it true that this is a common problem ?

Is there a cheaper way to fix the solenoid like cleanign etc etc...

any feedback is appreciated ...

How could the quote be for $1700 if CTUNA's E90post reference calls for 30 min of labor?

30 minutes if you have done it several times maybe
If you have never done it I think it would take you 4 or more hours.
Well I guess if you had the N52 it would be a lot faster as you don't have to
remove anything.
Pricing for auto repairs in Australia is apparently higher than the high prices here
in the US.

Yeah..crazy stuff. My indy will be busy if/when I need those replaced. Or, if it's a warm sunny day and there isn't anything else to do, I just may get my hands dirty

parts $800+

Labour.... Gxd knows how long it takes those trainee 17 years old mechanics to remove the solenoid... they get paid $10 an hour we got billed $90 an hour
