90 535i clutch noise
I can't believe how much noise my clutch makes. Car runs strong and shifts smooth but when I start it or shut it off it sounds like a shaking can of marbles. I know about dual mass flywheels and how they act. How long do they last? My 535i has 187,000 miles and I drive it everyday. Also I notice a clacking noise at low speed if I am in a "lug" situation such as a drive thru. I try to avoid the low speed "lug" situations but you can't always do it. The clutch itself feels strong and will spin the rear tires if you wanted to. No changes in rpm at speed, I don't feel like it's failing....But the noise makes me wonder...Any advice or solutions??

Could be your throw out bearing is going bad , but that's just without hearing it , when you have the clutch engaged does the noise goes away ? If it does ,that's ur throw out bearing , thats assuming the clutch and pressure plate are new .

My car has a rattling dual mass, pretty common at this age and milage, mine is just shy of 180k. From what I have read, it really is not a concern unless the noise REALLY bothers you. Then a flywheel replacement is the only option.
I keep driving mine as well and, just accpet the rattle when I shut the car off. When the clutch goes I will do a single mass conversion from an e28 car. Now a grinding noise when you hold the clutch pedal down... that would be a throw out bearing issue. This rattle at shut down is the dual mass flywheel.

Sh!t man, my Z does it lol...
I always just at tributed it to my throwout bearing. Shes raced in solo comp with a stock resurfaced flywheel and ACT sprung sixpuck with ACT HD pressure plate... Sent from Joe's Galaxy Tab 2 via BimmerApp

My transmission makes the same noise, really only noticeable in neutral when stopped in my case. Also seems to happen more when the transmission is warm versus at first start up in the morning when it's cold. When I disengage the clutch the rattling goes away instantly, which makes me assume it's the throwout bearing. I'm unsure if my flywheel is single or dual mass (1990 525i, M20), but I think it's single. Either way, I plan on doing a clutch job somewhere in the not too distant future, so I'll be able to take care of the noise then.
