BMW HUD Compared to Lexus HUD - Photos

My son bought a new Lexus GS 350 and I took it for a drive today and compared the HUD unit to the one on my BMW. This is one of those options you can do without... until you have it. Then you're hooked.

The Lexus HUD offers some info that the BMW doesn't like RPMs, a ECO bar graph, what gear you're in when in manual mode. I also noted that the MPH digits are larger than the BMW ones.

The BMW does offer color where as Lexus is white. Also, when using navigation the BMWs directions are larger and the color helps pick them out easier and it shows the street names. BMW also shows the active cruise control info.

Both HUDs are good and for me must have options, but IMHO I will give BMWs HUD a higher score.

Next comparison will be the radar cruise control.

Lexus with navigation showing upcoming turn...

Lexus with RPMs and speed....

BMW with navigation showing upcoming turn....

BMW with navigation showing upcoming turn & Active Cruise Control on....

Thanks for the comparo. This is indeed really nice info to have. I prefer the BMW one in terms of color and presentation, but the Lexus one in terms of more info it can display. Luckily for us, our F10s can be coded to display the additional info, negating the Lexus HUD advantages.

Thanks again.

PS: While I didnt research the GS350 as much as I would like prior to getting the F10, I wonder how other features compare. Things like the interior ambient lighting, console display, navigation system, etc.

How do you code the F10 to show RPM and gear in the HUD? I've never found an answer to this.

I find the BMW HUD is great, particularly when Navigation is engaged. I like that fact that the arrow directions are so legible and you don't have to have the main NAVI screen on the Navigation module.

BMW's HUD does not show both rpm and navigation; it's one or the other. Can Lexus' show both? The Lexus' HUD rpm looks small.

My 2012 535 only shows KPH and Navi directions. It does not show RPM. Did you manage to code it so it does show RPM?

Sorry, I was referring to the HUD on the M car. The 2011 535i shows only what you've mentioned.

After further research, it looks like you'll need an F10 M5 for this to work. (Interestingly, it used to work on the e60.) I thought I had read RPMs being able to be coded on the HUD for the F10, but it looks like it is for the M cars with M clusters and not the basic F10s.

I noticed this is somewhat awkward too. However, with tinted windows all the way around and the sun roof closed, I find it easy to drive without sunglasses in this car since its so dark inside (with black leather too).

No, polarized sunglasses wipe out the display in both cars. I bought a nice pair of non-polarized sunglasses dedicated to the BMW.

Ha! I thought I was the only nut to do that. My Maui Jim's were great, but really screwed up the HUD. I figured if I paid for the HUD I could also pay for a $100 pair of non-polarized Ray Ban's. The RB stay in the car... Still don't like the sunglasses though (I see the reflection on the inside of the lens) but I am slowly getting used to it...

Nice comparo! I agree that once you get it as an option, it's hard to do without it. It's a must have feature on any future car of mine.

Yeah, my wife's car shows pretty much everything the that can be shown related to the engine (tach, oil press, oil temp, fuel, coolant, etc), nav, and radio preferences....plus you have about 6 different ways of displaying that information..and it's a 2006! Too bad, the graphics are straight from Atari...

No, probably not. However, it would have been nice to say I checked out the competition instead of just buying the F10 simply because I'm a loyal BMW owner.

Tell that to MB. Most of their cars don't even have HUD as an option.

Most MBs I see don't even have HIDs which is a disgrace for the brand and price paid, but I digress...sorry
