USB Software Update - help

All, I checked to see if my car had an eligible software update which it did, UPD05004. I have formatted my flash drive to FAT-32, stick it in the USB plug in the center console (I have a 2013 740Li X) go to software update > USB and I keep getting the message "Incompatible software on USB device. More info: www.bmw.com/update"

Anyone else experience this, very frustrated at this point.

Current s/w versions:
TN-001.020.022
MN-001.020.022

Did you try the USB slot in the glove compartment?
That is the usual goto slot for updates or importing music into the computer/hard drive.

My apologies on that. I saw quick pic of 2013 manual showing both slots. Didn't read to see it is based on car options as to whether it is there or not.

I've only updated maps in my '09 via USB. On first try it didn't recognize the update. Once I cleared software pre-loaded on flash drive it recognized the update and went well.

Best of luck on getting it to work.

I'm having the same problem... I formatted a flash drive and SD card to FAT32 and still getting the incompatible message on both when plugged into the USB in the center console. I have a 2014 740Li....
I see you post was almost two years ago... Did you find a solution...?...? jl
PS: See my post on "random chime / gong in BMW" ... another problem.

FAT32 is the problem. Format it to LEAN16 and you will be fine.

SkyDan, Thanks for the tip. I only have formatting for NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and exFAT. I was unable to find a program with LEAN32 formatting. I appreciate your input. jl ...

UPDATE Dec 15th:
I was going to download the software update today for the 5th time... and... I see there is a new software update....MN 2.255.60 and TN 2.255.62.
I downloaded this new update and presto.... no problem installing in the car.

BMW-JOE, I assume "LEAN32" was a joke. I had the same problem you are having until I made the layout and spelling of all of the files exactly as required. Re-read the instructions, it's all in there.

Is there any option for software updates for 2011 or earlier models without the software update option in iDrive? I'm sure there has to be a way. Please advise.

I downloaded the update to my usb stick then plugged into car. It will download about 50% then stop and say invalid file. Anyone know why? Or how to fix it?

software update

I had the same problem some time ago and I think,... I think, not sure,... that I formatted the USB stick and downloaded the software again on the formatted stick.

Formatting

Formatting:
To format your USB stick (or a CD or DVD or SD card) click on "Computer" and find the device on the page that comes up. The USB will show as a "removable disk".
Right click the the USB,CD, DVD, removable disk.
There will be a drop down menu ... half way down you will see "Format"
Click on "Format" to start the formatting of your USB stick.

Download the software up-date onto the formatted stick and try installing it into your car.

NOTE: There are different types off formatting but it doesn't matter which one you use. ..Usually.

Also, when you start the formatting it will automatically run a quick format that takes all of 2 seconds. This is sufficient for most applications.

You will notice there is a box to check for a "full format" . This does a more complete erase of the device. It takes a long time and is not needed.

I hope this works for you.

PS:.... I just checked my post from Dec 2014 and I was able to finally update my software because a new version had just come out.

From Dec 2014: "I was going to download the software update today for the 5th time... and... I see there is a new software update....MN 2.255.60 and TN 2.255.62.
I downloaded this new update and presto.... no problem installing in the car. ..."

I'm pretty sure it must be formatted for FAT32 file systems. Unfortunately newer Windows platform may not have that option. Even if it is available, they generally have a limit of 16 or 32 Gigs on the size of the stick that can be formatted. I had a 64 gig stick and was too cheap to go and buy another one. I googled for a bit and found some freeware that would format a large USB stick to FAT32. It worked just fine, and installed just fine. I did use it to do a map upgrade, not a software upgrade, but I think it's the same issues.
