Terrible gas mileage 08 535i

Hi, my new 08 535i has 53k miles. I am getting 13.8-14 mpg in city driving. Now, when I cruise on the highway I am having no issue getting 30MPG. I am confused, I am driving the same as my old 335i which I averaged no worse than 17mpg driving the same way\route daily. The main difference is my 335 was a manual trans and the 535i is steptronic. I thought the weight of the 5 is only like 100 lbs more and the auto is more efficient In The modern cars.

Any ideas? Does carbon buildup have any effect on mpg? Anything else to check? My car is cpo'ed as well.

Are you in Driver Sport? That'll reduce mileage...

The mileage seems pretty good to me. I have 06 525i for daily use and it's 15.6 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway.

As long as the highway fuel consumption is o.k. I wouldn't worry. The difference between your 3 series and 5 series might be a cold winter (compared to which weather with the 3series?) and/or low tire pressure. And of course the weight difference.
Since you are talking about city driving, the weight really matters.

i found my mileage is getting worse as well. i'm at 11.8L per 100KM(Metric) in average with mixture of city and hwy. once the weather drop below freezing point. it raise to 12.5L per 100KM instant. i always thought cold air make the car run more efficient?

I have Dinan S2, so I don't care about my city mileage (LOL). I get 26+ on hwy and 20mpg avg (according to car). If you are doing city drag racing, your mileage will stink...but you will be having fun! Take s road trip, put the cruise on 75 and let is know what mpg you get...

Comparing apples and apples - a 535i to a 335i - it is closer to 100 pounds. Now a 550i? Yeah, closer to 400 pounds heavier.

Really? A 335 is only 100 lbs lighter than a 4000lb+ 535? Really?

One of the hard parts about comparing is he different types of E60s, or in your case, E61, which is about 300 pounds heavier than an E60 535i. 4,000 lbs vs 3700 lbs. So from your perspective, you were right about on.

Try a fuel filter and air filter swap. That's my idea.

Mileage drops off a lot when it's cold out, especially when you take short trips. Cold oil/grease is more like taffy than oil - it takes heat to thin it out and make it more slippery. Heat comes from gasoline. All-wheel-drive is more bearings and gears and rotating stuff, so more oil/grease to warm up. I saw the same thing with my 1998 Subaru Outback - mileage dropped from 21 summer to 18 winter, over the same daily commute, just because of the cold. And in the new-to-me 530, I've got heated seats and steering wheel, which require power from somewhere... oh wait, it eventually comes from gasoline.

Wait till summertime, and see what your city mileage is. I bet it'll be higher.

Ok, I'll,see how it does in the summer. It has been really cold, and when I cruise on the highway and reset the computer the numbers look really good. If it stays like this I should have bought the 550i! Minute resting fact, my ML550 rated at 13/18 city highway is getting better average MPG than my 535i rated at 17/26. I did test drive a an 08 550i msport, but it was 9'grand more than my car cost with similar options and worse condition. But the SAT trans and the msport body kit was really sick.

If you drive both ML550 and 535i for a month , same route and ML550 gives you better mileage; something wrong!
either you have dirty air-filter, old spark-plugs (535i needs new set every 45k-miles), carbon build up, sticky caliper, bad injectors (though you'll see code in dash likely), need higher octane gas (this is turbo engine after all). etc.

Well, I will check that stuff with my next service appointment. My car has ) year maintenance so ill get it all checked. Car runs great, so nothing was concerning me till the bad mileage. I'll check the filter myself. I probably do more highway driving in the ml550. And yes, my commute in my 535i is short, only like 3 miles. But it's the same thing with my 335 which I owned for 5 years taking short commutes.

I never checked between city vs highway, but my combined in my 2010 535xi (Dinan s2 & exhaust) was 21 mpg as of 60k miles. For the 3 years I owned my 2007 525xi (no mods) the combined was 21.5. What is your combined Grubster?

Well, because my commute is all suburb miles, it's like 13.8 I am running 93 octane. I checked the air filter. It looked fine. Slightly dirty, nothing horrible. When I do get on the highway and hit cruise, it does very well. I have a new baby and we only drive him in the ML right now so I get little highway mpg. But the car should get at worse 15-17 city, I take off easy, coast when I can etc.

If the gas in Chicago is like it is in St. Louis during the winter, the "crapoline" i.e. reforumlated gas, will kill off the mileage. In the winter here, October to March, I lose about 3-4 MPG in my Nissan truck and BMW as well. Over 15 years of monitoring MPG in all my vehicles proves the same trend.

I don't really see where this crapoline is helping the environment considering you have to burn MORE gas in the winter and put your foot in it to get the same amount of power out of the vehicle. Get rid of the ethanol and all the other crap put into gas and things should improve for everyone.

This is the reason your MPG is so low. It takes 2-3 miles for your engine to reach operating temperature -- before that it runs very rich. Over time such a short commute will cause serious problems with your engine, mostly due to moisture & fuel in the oil. You need to get your engine fully warmed and drive it for at least 30 minutes on a regular basis (weekly would be best) to evaporate the moisture & fuel from your oil.
