1997 Z-3 Seats

Does anyone know what seats where offered in the 1997 Z3? I recently bought one and I would like to redo the interior. Mine has the beige leather seats with the ostrich leather in the center. It was built in March 97. Do you know if any other style seat was offered?

I am not sure about 1997 since it was so long ago.

There are only 3 different Z3 seats.

Base Z3 Seats.
Sport Z3 Seats.
M Sport Seats (M Coupe and Roadster Only)

They all have the same base and electronics.

M Seats have a different occupancy sensor, and are generally narrower than the Z3 seats.

M Seats have a higher grade leather, with smooth leather and no texture.

Z3 Sport seats were standard on the Z3 coupe and optional on the Z3.

My car was built about a month after yours - 4/97. At that time I'm pretty sure there was only the standard seats available. You can easily retrofit any <4/99 seats, M seats or "sport" seats (if you can find them) and the electrical harnesses will mate up with no problem. I replaced mine with M seats from a 8/98 build date M Coupe. Later models used a different electrical harness and there is wire splicing work required to make them operational

I did the same swap of non-M sport to M sports seats in my '01 Z3 3.0. But it required some wire cutting and soldering, because the wiring harness changed in non-M 01's.

The M Coupe seats are nice because they have a hard plastic back, rather than leather - which scuffs easily.

While test driving Z3's and M Roadsters for about a year while shopping for the wife's Z it seemed that all the cars that had the M seats or sport seats had less leg room than the cars with the standard seats. It made a difference to me being 6'3" with long legs.

Her car has regular seats I was just posting so the OP would know if he changes he might lose some leg room. While the car is fine for her and its her car I can't drive it for long drives due to the lack of leg room. I couldn't even drive an S2000 or Miata at all and she of course wanted a bimmer anyway. But we did pass on an M Roadster due to the lack of the extra leg room and she didn't care about the bigger engine etc.

I still have my Sport seats from when I swaped them out for coupe seats if you are interested.
I'm sure there is something we could barter for....

Carl's seats are just like the tan ostrich leather ones above.

I have some in blue.

Hey CarlM,
I'm interested in your tan sport seats if you are looking to get rid of them.

Another option is to re-cover the seats. LeatherSeats.com has patterns for both the regular seats and sport seats and can make replacement leather in just about any color or style you like. They can also do foam repair if you need it.

You can choose leather far superior to the original for an upcharge. They don't have the ostrich leather pattern, however. That pattern is pressed into the leather and is not readily available.

In addition to their website, they have several YouTube videos on their Z3 seats. One of the videos features my seats.

No affiliation other than a satisfied customer.
