xdrive35d exhaust smell

I have a 2010 X5 xdrive35d and whenever I am backing out of my garage or at a stop light I smell burnt diesel fuel inside the cabin, and the smell is not overly strong but is definitely noticeable. I was wondering if this is a concern I should take into the dealership to have them look at. Please note that the windows are not rolled down nor is the sun roof open.

Most likely cracked EGR cooler. Open the hood and take off the plastic engine cover. If the front parts of the engine are covered in black dust, there's a leak. You can also sense it by placing back of your palm next to it when engine is running (obviously don't touch it).

The EGR cooler is definitely a possibility. Has happened to a lot of us.

But if your problem is intermittent, it could also be the particulate filter cooking off accumulated crud. Stinks like shyte, and very alarming the first time it happens to you. (Smells a lot like fresh roadkill on a hot cat.)

update: I popped the hood and took the cover off, the engine is covered in soot and I can feel the exhaust coming out from the engine. Will be taking it in shortly.

Yup, that's it. I had mine taken to dealer and EGR changed. Before the change, I could smell the problem by popping the cover.

After they replaced the EGR a week ago, the smell haven't occured. I am positive it will fix for you as well.

If its common, there should be a recall or something.

Its a safety issue.

I have attached an image I took from the under the hood..

Is very dirty for a 2010, I believe this is the EGR cooler.

My favorite part is that all that sh!t is being purposefully force-fed back through the engine...

That's not the worst part. Worst is to have your cabin full of that sh!t.

I hope there's enough stink (pun intended) raised for BMW to recognize and address the issue, esp. considering they plan on bringing more diesel models to US they should be extra sensitive to any bad publicity.

If you are serious about getting a recall, here is the process that other people have used.

If i am not mistaken, there was already a recall for EGR. My vehicle did not need to be brought in at that time (apparently had the "good" EGR already). Looks like there needs to be another recall.

Update: took the BMW to the BMW dealership, they said everything is "normal" with the EGR cooler even though it's covered in soot. I showed them this thread and they printed off the picture I took of the EGR cooler and showed the technician. Will be picking up vehicle soon... wondering if the smell will continue..... if it does, should I take it to another BMW dealer? The dealer I took it too is Moritz BMW in Arlington, Texas.
