Interesting thread. I have spend a lot of time shopping for a mid size SUV over the past six weeks. Here are my observations that led me to order the X5;

X5 50i with M packages; Very good in all areas (except they lost the cargo rails.... why? those are very handy) but the price is $7000 higher than equivalent ML550. The "head up" option is nice and electronics are as good as Porsche and Mercedes. Wish they would get rid of the run flat tires.

Cayenne S; Nice cockpit, handling and has many options. More exclusive than any others. Less storage space and back seats don't fold even close to flat. Price is at least $10,000 more than BMW and that's too much to pay for an exclusive logo.

ML550: Fastest and cheapest of the three, but looks too much like my 2006 ML500. It's the only one with back seats that fold totally flat. It also has very convenient cargo rails.

Audi, Lexus and Acura; All are way underpowered and too slow. And every soccer mom in the USA has a Lexus.

Mike, how would you rate the Aventador compared to the Murcielago in terms of being a raw unfiltered driving machine? Is it more muted and refined as most new cars seems to be or is it just as raw?

Wow, talk about off-topic. One reply, then we go offline with it...

I haven't driven the Murcielago, yet. That said, I expected the Aventador to be rather sterile and easy to drive, just like the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, Bentley Continental GT Supersports, Audi R8 GT, etc... It was at big *****cat, up to about 7/10ths... then it was one serious tail-happy beast that really needed a delicate touch. I think I did seven sessions on the track at Homestead that day, and my grin grew larger with each lap (especially when I played cat-and-mouse with another journalist in another Aventador). The big Lambo has character, flaws and it isn't easy to drive at the limit. Around town, most rich owners would never know.

Thanks Mike, now back to our regular program. All X5 comparisons will very soon be obsolete. The F-series BMWs are imo the biggest change in BMW's history and the new X5 will likely follow suit.

I can't say I share your faith based on the rest of the Fs. I do however have high hopes on the F80 M3 but I'm also thinking that I might prefer the M2. I'm getting more and more convinced that the future of pure connected driving will only be available in the smallest, simplest cars while the traditional icons will become softer, less sharp and more isolated while providing silly power.

Exclusive to us... but to most people on the road, Cayenne S or not.. it looks the same... X5 35i, 50i, X5M will also look the same...
Depending on where you live.. both Cayenne and X5 are a dime a dozen... So no matter if you spent 60K or 100K+ to those people you will get the same attention

Totally true. The best example today is Aston Martin. Go buy a used Vantage V8 for the mid-$50,000 price range and people will think it is a brand-new $180,000 car!
