What's the best all around car you've ever driven?
So, by all around I mean a car that you could live with everyday in a practical manner. I think practical would be the only constraint...

I would have to say the best all around car would be something like a 535xd or A6 TDI Quattro. Pretty fast when you need it, but if you just want to cruise along, it will do it easily, while getting fantastic MPGs

My Volvo V70R.
If I could find one with a manual transmission, I'd buy another. If mine had been so equipped, I would never have sold it.

My old E39 (530i). My F10 is more comfortable, but for the overall driving experience there's no comparison IMO.

My 997.1 Carrera S. I actually liked it more than the turbo, and could until having 3 kids, fit my two young ones in the back seat.

If practicality is the only constraint, then the X5M. If I can throw practicality into the wind, it would be whatever car I buy in 2014.

Overall: Porsche Cayenne GTS
Above - go anywhere: E61 M5 MT Above - big trunk: E90 M3 Above - everything but pure driver excitement: My uncle's 1973 Porsche 911 The E90 M3 has an incredible range since it reaches so far into the sports realm and still works as a family car and commuter. But it would suck on an offroad trail... |

I own both, the worst and the best, at this time.
There is nothing worse than the current Niva, I did not own any car better than my F11. |

Practical being subjective: Black / Black 2000 Land Rover Range Rover 4.6 HSE w/ the first factory navigation system in the States.
Hate how the new full-size looks in person (test drove it, etc.), but remains the most well-rounded vehicle on the road. Capable in every weather condition, perfect size, luxurious, sporty, safe, has character; mechanically reliable, egh... Last edited by dbs600; 02-03-2013 at 08:29 PM. |

1994 Porsche 928 GTS 5 speed.
I regret selling that one almost every day. This car felt like it was carved from one solid ingot of high quality steel. The exhaust note from the big Porsche v8 was intoxicating. It had instant go- from any gear in any speed. Crazy fast, Handling superb- especially considering it's size. The interior was like a leather lined intimate cockpit designed for the driver's needs in every way. This was the last of the truly' hand made' - Porsche's except for the exotics. It was one of only 27- 5 speed versions brought into the USA in 1994. The next to last year of production. I put a set of adjustable Koni's and improved on the exhaust . These two improvements made it fantastic. I would truly like to have this one back.

If we had an F11 here, I would own one and my answer would be different.

I think the F12 650i is real close for being an all around car. It's fast, comfy, sporty and full of tech. It handles pretty good for a car its size but it is that size that keeps it from being what I call the best all around car.
I'm going to choose the Infiniti G37. It's sporty, decent power, comfy and handles better than current Bimmers. Not Bimmers of the past but better than the current crop. Plus it's more economical which helps with a car being considered an all-arounder. |
