Hit the garage.....scuffed bumper.

So I just got finished washing my car which is the first wash since I picked up the car from Phil at Detailers Domain after he put on opti coat. I used the foam gun for the first time. The car looks flawless and I sprayed Adams detail spray as a final step allover the car. I was thinking how flawless the car looked and patting myself on the back..well until....

I get in the car to pull it back into the garage and for some reason the steering wheel is up very high and I feel like I'm sitting real low I felt like a toddler trying to drive. Can hardly judge where I'm going it was nuts . Now mind you I'm driving a hair over 0mph and bam! a nice love tap with the house. Right on bumper over fog light on drivers side. It almost looked like a rubber scuff so I picked at it with my finger and it seems the paint is still soft from factory? As it seems like i can pick off some paint..very weird but anyway I'm pissed.

See 2 attached photos. The one with the flash makes it look real bad so I took one with no flash as well. I will also take a better photo when I get in later with my cam as these are phone pics.

I know this can't be buffed out but can't something be done at a body shop like sanding and painting that little 2-3 inch spots then blend?

Thanks for any advice.

From your past posts, I think you won't be happy with anything less than a repainted bumper

Ok here are some other photos, so I guess a body shop has to do a entire bumper removal and paint whole bumper to fix this? How annoying, no other options?

This sucks! Sorry to hear this.

I did sort of the same thing. Pulling out of the detailer's driveway, my first time sitting in and moving the car, I scraped the bottom of the front lip. Fortunately you can't see the scrape without laying on the ground and looking up at the bottom.

I'm going to get some touch up paint for the time being and want to see what the local body shops say, totally sucks if these guys can't fix it without having to remove bumper.

Something similar happened to me, someone backed into my car and left, honestly if you want it to be 100% back to normal, it will have to be repainted. You can have it partially painted and blended but I guarantee you that it won't be perfect. I had mine buffed and that barely did anything, then I took it to the next step, you can barely see it and probably wouldn't see the mark on my bumper, but I'll always notice it because I know its there. If you are really bothered by it, I highly suggest you have it repainted.

Thanks Scott, what was the next step that you had done after the buffing did not work?

No problem diesel, after I had it buffed out, I had the damaged area repainted and blended. It looks a lot better, but the best decision is to have the whole bumper repainted. I haven't decided if I'm even gonna bother having it repainted at this point because its not bad at all, but my advice is to not make the same mistake I did and just do it right the first time. I'm not sure if you're leasing or if you bought it, but if you leased it, maybe you'd like to just buff and blend because I guarantee they won't find out when you turn it in. If you have any questions let me know. You can check out my thread from my incident: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...241&highlight=

Lol well by Monday I will make the rounds and see what the body shops say. I think its crazy to remove and repaint whole bumper for a 2-3 inch area so I will see what the next best thing they can do.

I am very anal about everything when it comes to my cars lol. I guess I'm okay with how it turned out, not perfect but I know no one is going to notice and I realized its mostly psychological. I'm also not as worried about it because a family friend was able to do it for free.

So I read your other thread. So what exactly did they do? Buff the section then repaint it? Bumper taken off or no?

Did the little scuff cause all the swirls in the paint around it?

No that was me feverishly applying compound trying to buff some out right after it happened.

I think black Sharpe ic a more clean look than touch up paint. You can also try black nail color.

Ohh man, everyone has their bad days,
I do feel bad bro.

Try eyeing out on eBay for a replacement bumper.

Good Luck!

I recently caused similar damage to a black F30 328 loaner car I had. I was backing out of a very tight parking spot waiting for the parking sensors to beep, only to learn the car didn’t have them. I just touched a small metal pole protecting a building. My free oil change cost me $700, which I paid to the dealer to have them repaint the rear bumper shell. Technology can be great and not so great. The only positive thing was that it was not my car.

Not so fast

I have a carbon black metallic F10 that needed a new rear bumper and repaint of course. Took them weeks to get the paint to match. The had to repaint it after trying 3 different colour combinations and advice from a factory rep. After the paint which was a really good match, I had to have a detailer come and wet sand the bumper to take out the orange peel. The bumper looks perfect now, but it was a ton of work. Take it to the best detailer you can find and see if they can fix it without painting it. Also, consider the professional guys who blend the paint for small fixes like that. I have used those guys and the good ones do excellent work.

P.S. The water based paints they use now are not easy to apply.

Awwww man! I feel for you. I can only imagine. Glad I'm not the only one who drives myself crazy with stuff like this though, lol.

Really though, just think of it this way: The car has already been deflowered, which is a good thing. Unfortunately your case is kind of extreme (usually I'd hope the "deflowering" would be like rock chips, or swirls here or there, etc.), but I think it'll help your psychy in the long run, as weird as that concept is.

I'm sure if you got it blended and matched you really wouldn't notice a difference. Sure it may not be PERFECT, but at least you can keep the rest of the bumper in OEM paint condition, and that's such a small area, you won't even notice it after you stop paying attention. I like to abide by the rule of "if you can't see if from 3 feet away, it doesn't exist". However, considering the swirls by the compound it seems a larger area would have to be treated, making the case for a fully new painted bumper maybe more enticing in this situation.

I'm surprised the parking sensors didn't beep? It's funny how those nannies make us (me, at least) much worse drivers, in terms of diminishing my own alertness skills. I do great so far with my F10, with the camera and sensors, etc., however now that I'm used to them, it's like I NEED them. I feel like a caveman when I'm in a car with no parking nannies, like totally no concept of the cars physical limits.

As for paint matching, on a non metallic color like Jet Black, I'd assume it'd be a cinch to match, so I wouldn't sweat that at all. To be honest, the color matching of the bumper to the metal rest of the car isn't ever perfect anyway, which is noticeable if you shine an LED light on them. I'm sure a good body shop will do fine. I had a Pewter Mercedes that was 3 years old at the time get the whole door repainted and they did a FLAWLESS job. I was so paranoid about it as I had just gotten the car (my W211) and I literally couldn't tell, under any lighting or pictures, etc. It made me a real believer in GOOD body shops.

If there's ANY part of your car that you'd want to have to have painted, if you were forced to choose, it would be the bumpers, so maybe that can "glass half full" it.

It was buffed twice and repainted, I had them keep the bumper on only because I needed the car back ASAP, it was rushed, but still doesn't look too bad; there are some swirls if you get close up. Here's a picture after the repair:
If you looked at my thread, you saw how bad it was before
