In order of cars owned:
1990-1994 - Beige Ford Fiesta Mk1 950cc (GB)
1996-1997 - Red/Grey Rover 218d (GB)
1997-1999 - Maroon BMW E36 316i (GB)
2002-2005 - Silver BMW E46 320d (CH)
2005-2009 - Silver BMW E46 330xi (USA)
2010-2012 - White Audi A3 2.0T (Singapore)
2013- Spacegrey BMW F11 M550d (CH)

Best all-round car so far is by far and away the M550d, even though it's barely a week old. Plenty of room, shed-loads of cunning features, tons of poke, my only regret is that it's not a manual transmission.

I was actually aiming for ever driven as opposed to owned. Perhaps a loaner, test drive car or a friends ride...

I wasn't looking to build any coalitions or a consensus about the greatest car ever made; just your subjective and personal opinion about the best all around car you've driven. It could be an Rolls Royce or a 1973 Beetle...

However, my 550 is darn close and 50 times more convenient (at half or less the cost).
I've been blessed to either own or have had the the opportunity to drive some of the objectively greatest cars ever made, but I've never been in the inside of a running Aston.

I'm going to have to find some new wealthy friends lol.

The two most obsene and ostentatious cars I've ever driven were my Lotus Esprit Turbo and my friends Ferrari Testarossa. These cars seemed as though they were designed by the Marquis de Sade for torture.

Oh best car ever driven?
It has got to be the mighty Lamborghini Aventador. Nothing can compare.
Nissan GTR is pretty good too though.

Thanks! And in answer to the reviewers who thought that the brakes are not up to much, well I do beg to differ - they're plenty fine enough.

It was snowing today, here...

Yeah, now you just need to adjust for "all around", I'm sure the Lambo scores high on aspects as fun to drive and track days but I can see some issues with taking the kids to school, access remote hiking trails and traveling through Montana in a blizzard or picking up some furniture at IKEA. It's hard to see the best all rounder outside a sporty, luxurious wagon or SUV.

For me it is a tie between an SUV and a sedan. For SUV it is the x5M. Sedan is Porsche Panny GTS.

Mercedes Benz ML63 AMG..it had everything I wanted in terms of comfort, practicality and speed. Full options and some more, room for kids, good tunk space..and very fast. It was tuned and I often took it to drag strip to insult sport sedans from competing brands

The only reason I sold it was the fear of having my engine develop the known AMG headbolt issue so sold it at only 34,000 km

I've been blessed (or tortured really) to have a friend that was a Softie and a friend that was with Sun in the Golden Age of the two companies. If I'd never driven the Aston, I wouldn't obsess over it as my future "goal" car.

I've never been in a Ferrari though. Sat in a Carrera GT once (not driven). The only Lotus I've attempted to get in was an Elise, and I didn't fit (too tall; that car is for midgets).

Do you still have the Lotus? That is pretty gorgeous car.

I did drive a Ferrari 430 Scuderia around a race track....

.... I guess the term "all around" is keeping me from voting it highest. Sure is the best one night stand one can ask for, though.

Girlfriend's S4. I love my 335i. And, have had F10s as loaners that I liked. But, the S4 is special. It's the perfect size. It's hella fast. Rides great. Has the steering the newer BMWs have forgotten. With the torque vectoring rear, I fear no corner. The S4 just rotates with no drama. My pants will get soaked before the S4 will lose composure.

Oh yeah I completely know what you are talking about.

I drove the Lamborghini Aventador around a race track.

Best day of my life!

On topic though, it won't be the best 'all arounder'. I vote for be F10 M5 for that.

Ohh damn, that musta been incredible.

Yeah, when I got my F10 I called it the "Swiss Army Knife Of Automobiles". I really believe that's true, for me. It does so many things all at once.

If there was one car I could drive for the rest of my life, it would be an F10 M5. Best all arounder you can ask for. I think Top Gear had a segment where they called it the "Best Car In The World" or something like that.

Fortunately for me, an underrated 300 HP is enough, so I'm pretty good with what I got!

When I think of all-around, I think of a car that may not be great at any one thing but does everything good. That's why I chose the G37. It's not great at anything. But its good for daily driving easily, very comfy. It's got 330-something horspower, enough to have some fun. It's Japanese car reliable. It's not cheap but won't break the bank. Not the best looking but attractive, better than most. It handles way better than most but not rough when you just want chill. It's not super expensive to maintain and repair. It elevates to another level easily when modded.
After reading everyones replies I still choose the G.
