Question Getting speed and direction information onto my android phone

Hi All,

In my free time (as a hobby), I am writing an android and iPhone app which will display speed and navigation information (provided there is a datasource like GPS to give this information) in a nice looking UI on the phone (somethink liek the BMW Heads Up Display).

I plan to make a copy ff the HUD system (not fully integrated ) by projecting this information onto a glass panel using a projector phone or a mini projector.

Now I was thinking of using the BMW onbord computer to provide me this information.

Question is:
1. How do I get this information onto my phone? if for example the phone is integrated into the BMW iDrive system? Are there ways to get this information to the phone?
2. Do I have to physically connect the phone to the onboard diagnostic port using a data cable? If yes then which cables do I use? How will this work from a protocol point of view?
If NO then are there ways to get this information from the car to the phone?

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

regards
Viv

Why are you trying to get this data from the car?
These phones already have GPS built-in.

yes you are right... but the car navi is supposed to be more accurate and realtime. plus the cell GPS might have a lag in a phone without a data plan and cell tower assist. or am i assuming wrong....

Not sure why you would have Android or iPhone without data plan...

But, this App says it can access GPS from OBDII port so should be possible.

You just need a BT OBDII adapter.

Let us know when this is done. Sounds really cool. Also, PM me if you are interested in writing some simple apps. I have a bunch of ideas for them but need a droid app developer.
