Mechanic is charging $440 to replace front right wheel speed sensor

Is that a reasonable price?! I have a 2001 model, if that means anything

Huh, speed sensor? Never heard of it. If you can find out what part it is check the price on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=XXXXXXX (substitute the last 7 of your VIN for XXXXXXX in the link)

Go to ECStuning.com and buy the sensor ,Jack up the car and support it with jack stand ,,,,,,and about an hour later waola you done, and save your self $ 300 that should be enough to buy you tons of beer ...

You 'can' test them, by the way.

Or you can connect a laptop with INPA on it and see which wheel is not sending data back to the ECU.
