Investigating the Sport Line vs M Sport steering wheels.

While waiting for my PCD I went to my dealership today. Did an in-depth comparison and analysis of the M sport wheel and the Sport Line F30 wheel. Conclusions:

1. I agree with what has been said on this forum before. The M sport wheel is a marvel! Super nice to the touch, exceptionally well engineered, perfect size, great shape, must be a pleasure to have and use on a daily basis. Certainly contributes to the fun factor of spirited driving.

2. The Sport Line wheel is NOT that far behind it. Granted it is NOT as soft to the touch but the leather wrap feels similar and when I compare it to the wheel I currently have in my 2007 E90 328xi there's already a World of a difference. Actually after spending a good while gripping both of them I will say I like the "softness LEVEL" of the Sport Line wheel better. I think it's perfect. This is however not based on DRIVING the cars, just on sitting in them for the better part of today's afternoon

3. Those wheels are obviously made to fit the cars they are being installed in. The M wheel is for... well, M themed cars. The Sport Line wheel is as close as it gets to it still being different enough. As I said before I still think the M wheel would look strange in a non-M car but it completes the M Sport interior perfectly! Therefore as much as I understand those few lucky ones who got it in their Sport Line cars have reasons to be happy IF you are a detail freak it would also be justified to feel weird about it. They made the Sport Line wheel for a very clear reason and it holds its own ground very well IMHO.

4. I spoke to my CA (he is one of the few out there who actually did their homework and seem well informed). According to him there is absolutely no indication (other that those few "accidents" that the M wheel is now being installed in any non-M cars. Sorry guys!

Having said all that personally I am happy about my choice and don't have any regrets. Being a photographer I am a visual person and I know I will just love the interior of my Sport Line with all the red accents.

I love the M Sport Wheel it was one of the things that sold me on getting the M Sport style and the color.

My first experience with an MSport wheel was a 2011 335i E93 loaner. It was the most comfortable wheel with soft leather and soft perforated leather on the upper hand-holds.

I was driving a new MSport last week. I do like the leather however, I wasn't thrilled with the spokes and the round hub looks strange mounted to a semi-square hub.

I will be happy with my Sport Line Wheel.

E9x M-sport wheels is different in shape and material than the F30 M-sport wheel. I think the F30 M-sport wheel is the better

FWIW, when I did PCD pickup a few weeks ago (i.e. saw very recent Nov+ builds) there were three Sport line F30s, and non of them had the M-sport steering wheel. I realize there have some been exceptions here an there, but it doesn't appear to be a running change on the standard Sports Line cars.

I definitely did not request it and I didn't even realize I had it on there until I read that other thread about Sport Lines now getting the M steering wheel.

BMWVIN wasn't working for me for the longest time but looking back even on my production order sheet (Vehicle Inquiry Design sheet) that has my production number and VIN, it has M Steering wheel included as N/C under the Sport line package. This is the document he sent me the day my vehicle went into production.

To be honest I was happy when I found out. Have you checked your VIN on bmwvin.com?

Then we have yet to figure out why some people are randomly getting the M sport wheel while others are not.

I noticed he had the adaptive M suspension, could it be related to that?

You might be onto something here. I just wish we could find SOMEONE at BMW who would have some YES/NO aswers and didn't have to play guesswork with this. It SEEMS like something a BMW CA *SHOULD* have a clear answer to. Yet... they just don't.

Wait so adaptive m suspension doesn't come with the sport line? I actually thought that was weird as well.

Is there an extra cost to that? And if not, why wouldn't everyone who gets the sport line get the adaptive m suspension?

M sport suspension comes with the Sport Line. Adaptive M sport suspention comes with M cars only... however, from what we just learned in this thread - not always!

Nope. Its 2 different suspensions. Theres a sport suspension that comes with RWD Sportline and an adaptive M suspension which comes as part of the optional DHP package.

No, Adaptive M comes as part of the $1K DHP package. I highly recommend this option.

I don't know what any of this means except the german words in the spec are just plain friggin cool!

There is no way a sport line car is getting an M wheel. I drove a sport line and an M sport and they are 2 different wheels. BMW would never put an M wheel or else they would be degraded the value of the M Sport package.

Of course, I can't back that statement up but why would they do that?

That's exactly what we're trying to figure out here. This is at least the third known case that we're hearing about in the recent month or so.

We already have photograph proof of at least two Sport line cars with M-sport steering wheels.

My personal theory is that dealers can add S710A to a car as a no charge option, if they know how to do it.

thanks but that is bull they can do that. I tried to get my dealer to order an extra set of M wheels at 19" and couldn't do it without paying the parts price.

Your frustration is misdirected. Parts price on the 19" wheels is to be expected. The $900 cost when buying the new car is a $900 "up charge" over the cost of the standard wheels.

When dealers order cars in their systems, they add the options to your build, one by one. Some dealer may have figured out how to "add" S710A to a build, when normally that is not a standalone order option.

I know that, thanks. But to go from a $900 up charge to over $700 per 19" wheel is crazy. BMW isn't alone in inflated wheel prices but come on.

I asked for a 19" tire/wheel package and the dealer quoted me $5k. I know I can get tires cheaper elsewhere but $3K for friggin 19"s is a joke.
