At first, I had high hopes for this car. It looks like a late 1970's Rover 3500, which was a fine looking car. The GM interpretation of that style was the ugly Chevrolet Citation.

Upon further reading, I see that it is a beast, like the Mercedes Benz R series and the Chrysler Pacifica. If the car had that shape but was the same height as the 3 series and maybe a bit longer, then it would be perfect.

I fear that car buyers' tastes in the U.S. and mainland China are overtaking the world. In those two countries, they like big mouth grills, like Audi and now many other cars. They like big cars with flash, which is not like the traditional BMW.

Arghh, good point, I'm kinda worried that's happening as well. Mercedes' gaudy newer designs are really pandering to that more-so than anyone, I think (Audi's grilles and fronts seem to be as well, however the rest of the cars are still very Germanic and bauhaus).

German's are the ones who have shaped the modern automotive world, in design and engineering, therefore any of these brands trying to sway away from that stern ideology for a quick popping smoke effect IMO will be engaging in some potential long term damage.

This thing is seriously hideous (like the 5GT).

I don't know why BMW feels the need to have so many models. Soon, it will have more models than full-line mainstream manufacturers like Toyota or GM.

If BMW has its way, it'll have the following models in its lineup:

- 1 series sedan
- 2 series coupe/hatch
- 2 series convertible
- 2 series gran coupe
- M2
- M2 convertible
- M2 grand coupe
- 3 series sedan
- 3 series touring
- 3 series gran turismo
- M3
- 4 series coupe
- 4 series convertible
- 4 series gran coupe
- M4
- M4 grand coupe
- M4 convertible
- M4 grand coupe
- 5 series sedan
- 5 series touring
- 5 series gran turismo
- M5
- 6 series coupe
- 6 series convertible
- 6 series gran coupe
- M6
- M6 gran coupe
- M6 convertible
- 7 series
- X1
- X3
- X5
- X5 M
- X6
- X6 M
- Z2
- Z4
- All the i-series vehicles

Is it me, or does this sound like one too many (overlapping) models?

Bad assumption.

Back to the bashing:

"It's so ugly, when it was born, the doctor slapped the mother."

"Hey, compared that thing, the 5 Series GT looks like Kate Upton."

"Well design team, at least now we have an option for the new Popemobile contract with the Vatican."

Actually, Mercedes have a far more diluted and larger lineup than BMW, not even including their Commercial vehicles.

But I agree, these marquees are making a mistake by spreading themselves so thin. The reason we see them so highly today isn't because for the last half century they've been flooding the markets with platform shared marketing-driven models.... they were focused, lean, and had concise offerings, all with ultimate attention put into them. Apple is the modern day interpretation of that, IMO.

As for cars, you're right, even with Porsche upcoming additions, their lineup will be closer to what BMW was back in the 90's, in terms of offerings. It'll set them apart from the overly diluted lineups of the other Germans going forward.

Sad.

Same here. Piggy bankin' it up . Was hoping to get a 991 this time around, but the Bimmer just enamored me so much and was the best decision to make (both in nature of the car and of course finances).

I think if BMW and Mercedes mismanage their lineups enough to the point where some of us who are vocal critics of "dilution of a premium priced brand" and want to have our cakes while eating them get fed up, Porsche is becoming more and more a viable and aspiration item.

As a former SAAB driver I'd love for a European company to make a stylish, sporty hatchback but BMW continues to crank out Citation-like monstrosities. The 5GT is easily the ugliest (non-SAV) that BMW produces, but I'll wait until I can see the 3GT in the flesh. The X1 would be preferable to this for my hatchback needs. At least for now it has hydraulic steering too. If Audi brought the A5 Sportback over I'd be all over it. Dunno why BMW can't see ugly staring them right in the face.

And to support this proliferation, they're dropping the manual transmission from the X3, won't bring it in the X1, and won't bring it here in any Xi car. It's a volume thing. They just can't sell enough units to justify certifying each each body-drivetrain combination.
So, lots of new body styles, but fewer drivetrain options. Unfortunately, my buying process *starts* with the drivetrain (manual+AWD) and expands from there. Oh well... When my 2006 X3 is done, I'm done with BMW.

I personally like it a lot, my wife asked me "what color can I get it"? Addresses the issues of the 5GT being too big and gives a bit of practicality for those who do not want a touring and want an alternative to an X3. For our needs it would be a perfect can, and you can do ED on it, which you can't on an X model other than the X1.

Anytime BMW puts anything new there are these kind of opinions. Then after a few years people evolve. Should we do some idrive bashing too, or maybe we can't live without it now?

I agree. The lower bumper is not as sunken either. The grilles are more Z4 like, which I like.

This is a clear refute to the notion that BMW does not care what people think or say in the forums. The complaints about some of the front look are clearly addressed here.

Unfortunately, any GT versions of BMW models lately have been an "utter failure", because most people do not like the hatch look. People who want more room will want the look of a crossover. With X1 so popular, I think it will be difficult for this 3 series GT to take hold.

BTW, I want to suggest we post more smartphone friendly posts. The OP could have used links and post a few pictures, instead of the loooonge text. It took forever to scroll the screen.
