Chip questions..

Looking to chip the old girl, went on E Bay and found a bunch of chips between $29.00 and $79.99. They are actual ECU chips not one of thoes universal wire in resistors. My question is has any one tryed one and If the 29.99 one is the same as the 79.99 one. Here is the link to one as an example. http://www.ebay.com/itm/88-93-BMW-53...6dc058&vxp=mtr

A search of the web found limited info on Ebay chips for my car. Thanks for the help guys!

Do a google serch and you will find many more brands.

The chips I have heard good things about are Racing Dynamics, Conforti, DINAN. But these are a bit more pricy that 30 bucks.

Yah I have looked at them, was just wondering about the E Bay ones and the differance if any. If I can get decent HP and Trq gains from a Cheap chip for right now then when I take on a engine rebuild next winter I would do Cam and custom tuend chip at that time.

This is as beaten as the "Which oil to use" and "wheel shaking" threads...

The ebay chips are copies of someone elses work most of the time. The R&D to create a chip tune costs money, making copies after the fact, doesn't.

The problem is, what are you getting? Do they have dyno sheets including a/f ratio for your engine and trans?

I spent the money and bought an EAT chip by Mark D'Sylva. It is excellent in my 535, huge midrange boost and I like the 6500 rpm limiter option. You need to run premium fuel regardless of the chip so why not commit to a known tune for your car? It could harm the engine if done incorrectly, and what kind of customer support do they offer?

Just spend the money to do it right, or skip it.

personally, i wouldnt put an ebay chip in my car. use a reputable one or dont bother, especially if, as you say, you are going to replace it again later anyways.

This . I swear by my tms (Turner Motorsoorts) chip. Got it instead of my BavAuto and noticed a night and day improvement.

Granted its for the M50, not M30.

why did you decide to chip your M50? the DME/ECU in those is such that remapping the factory chips is possible.

I've had it a very long time. Got a great deal on a TMS chip and jumped on it. I did not know you could remap stock chips. I got the BavAuto when i was a kid because having a "chipped BMW" in high school was groovy.

I too am under the impression that the DME for the M50 cannot be mapped

Would love to see evidence to the contrary.

The batteries for my keyboard and mouse are charging at the moment so typing this on my phone, but I will find some later on. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I'm not. We all know you can program EWS and O2 sensors out of them etc.

Best for the M30b35:

EAT
TMS
Tie for 3rd: Bav and Dinan (both are good. But the reviews are borderline equal)

Then you have the standalone ecus... which is another subject all together.

Never buy a ebay chip unless:
You are 100% sure it's one of the above or you don't care about your car.

For there are a few knock off eproms out there that claim to be one of the above if not better than them.
9 times out of 10 they aren't except for a MDUD chip for the 540. Hear nothing but praise from them.

Good luck and welcome to the fest.
