The weather forecast function
For all of this morning, there's been nothing on TV or radio except for yammering about blizzard conditions, 2' of snow, doom, desolation, dogs & cats living together, etc. I thought it was just hype.
Then, I get in my car and it shows me a snowflake by way of warning! It knows, man! It knows!!

Every BMW is different, like a precious snowflake. Your BMW just wanted you to know that.
Hey Zooks, I see that you have owned a 1970 Mach I. I have owned a 1969 Mach I (4 speed with a 428 SCJ) and a 1970 Boss 302. I miss them both. |

It did come to an unfortunate demise. I flipped it over, the long way, causing quite a traffic jam on the Mass Pike during a Friday rush hour. Smashed the poor thing flat. I was fine (let's hear it for seat belts, shoulder harnesses, and structurally solid high-back bucket seats). The first cop in the scene went to the closest person he saw standing near the car (me) and as no one was doing much of anything asked, "Is the driver dead?". When I said that I was fine, his rather stunned response was "YOU were in THAT?"

Glad you lived, but I'm a little sadder for the loss of the Mach I.
My '69 Mach I was a tired old drag car when I bought it my senior year in high school. I spun a rod bearing during a street race and ended up putting a rod through the side of the block! I bought an old 289 and a small input shaft top loader tranny and limped around for another six months before selling it and driving my dad's 1975 Pinto. I bought the '70 Boss 302 with $2500 of my student loan money in 1980 and my dad made me sell it a year later for $3500 when he had to help me out with tuition. I never let him forget that Boss 302's now go for between 50 and 100 grand for decent ones. |

In 1978 my father had to "shelter" in a fast food restaurant all night as he couldn't make it all the way home from his job at Boston Edison. Anyone want to talk about "all season" tires being suitable for Massachusetts now?

![]() You know, that snowflake freaks me out every time I'm not looking at my instrument cluster while driving, and I hear the chime... I think something's wrong. Then I glance at it, and with annoyed relief I'm like "Oh, it's just cold." I think BMW should make the snowflake a slightly different tone, because it also rudely interrupts my seatbelt-is-unfastened chime every time I start the car. Wouldn't be surprised if I'm not the first to suggest this.

It got on my nerves. At least BMW had the good sense not to have the car ding every time the temp drops below 40 F. The Beetle was a pretty nice car otherwise. The new Beetle (as opposed to the "New Beetle") is not a bubblesque cartoon like the last one. It actually handled pretty well and was fun to drive. Disappointingly the five cylinder auto that I drove didn't get much better fuel mileage than my 325i. |

Is there perhaps a "ding" muting setting in the on board computer? |

I get the point of the snowflake along the way. I've left my office with the temperature in the 40 and got home with it in the 20s, so I can understand a "Hey, look at the thermometer and think about possible ice" warning. I can understand a black ice warning when I start my car on a 35 degree morning. But I'm with TMC that telling me it's cold on a 13 degree morning does seem a bit over the top. If there is I've never seen it referenced. Could also be a year based thing.

I noticed that the sound system lowers the volume when you come to a stop. How cool is that?

You can adjust that, too. It's under the speed volume control setting (or something like that). I have been noticing a bunch of little things on my Bimmer since Monday that I sit there and say the same thing, "how cool is that?"

The more I learn about these cars the more I love them. How have I been a car guy this long and never owned a BMW?

Well I was conceived, in Jacksonville Florida, some years back and I don't think pictures exist (at least I hope to god they don't).
But I'm here, so it must'a happened. Last edited by BashedBarrique; 02-08-2013 at 05:45 PM. |

I was wrong. It dropped below 40 F today and my snowflake was announced by a "ding". |
