Trade my e36???

So I might be trading my e36 for an e39 like the one I had before. I will be checking out a 99 528i with 190k this weekend. Just to test the waters. I guess we will see what arises from this. What do you guys think? My car needs some tlc to make it nice, it needs a small dent repair on right side quarter panel and clear coat is coming off in the same area, was quoted $300 for that. It needs 2 new door handles. It needs to get the sunroof fixed. Drivers side vader has a slight tear, headliner needs to be replaced or reglued. Last but not least it needs a new tranny since mine has a worn second gear synchros. A guy is selling me one for $275. Yes I could fix all those little issues and keep my car running but I do miss my e39.

On the bright side my e36 has a lot of mods. A lot of preventive maintenance and more.

What do you all think? Thanks for any input.

What preventative maintenance have you done? What mods? I know I am a starting collector of E36's and no matter how much I froth at the mouth for an opportunity to own another one, I will avoid stanced/hellaflush cars, angel eyes/clear/Altezza lights, no matter how rare or awesome the car is.

The E39 has some major electrical problems. I wouldn't leave the E36 for the E39. At least not a '99. Get a 2002 or 2003.

people usually come back after selling... this is honestly why i havent sold mine yet..... ebcause i know ill be right back in one.

Well for starters it has a rebuilt engine that previous owner put in and has about 150k, it sounds real smooth. The entire cooling system has been done. Has turner motorsport chip with M3 cams. VCG has been done. Oil pan has been replaced along with gasket. Entire driveshaft with CSB has been replaced. Has LSD M3 Diff. Ground control adjustable coilovers on eibach springs and eibach sway bars. M3 interior and exterior, except for the rear bumper. It has Depo glass headlights. BBS rs style 5s with brand newish tires. And some other little things that I might have forgotten.

Dang this sounds like a lot invested. I keep on looking out the window at my car and I'm like I don't think that I should give my car up. Maybe you guys are right, if I give my car up I will end up getting another one in the future.

I don't think a 2002 or 2003 owner would want to trade for an older vehicle that has lots of mods on it tho lol.

I'm going to be picking up a used tranny on Monday to replace my current faulty second gear synchros. $275 is not such a bad deal. Will report next weekend of how everything went since I won't have time to install it during the week.

Time to fix the issues it has and keep it on the road.

QFT. I'm a perfect example.

So I finished installing the new transmission today in the morning. Damn those 2 starter torx bolts and nuts! Other than that everything went well. Feels so good to have my second gear back. What a major difference!

Nice job. It's not so bad once you've done it. I could probably do it all in a day if I had all the parts.

All I know is that my arms shoulders and neck are extremely sore! I feel like I was doing work at the gym! Lol. I didn't use a jack to lift the tranny up.

That was the point of my question.

I was tempted to sell my 318i several times, but when I looked back at how much that car taught me about BMWs (yeah it's an M44 engine, so what), I gain more and more appreciation for the work I put into it. But then again, I love tinkering with cars and these cars give me more than my fair share of that fix. And at the end, I have a huge smile on my face seeing my work pay off. I look at the receipts, chuckle, then tuck em away.

You did some good mods, sir. But I also believe you should do what is right for you. There are a lot of decent E36s on the road and even if you sell this one and get another one (you will, trust me), you'll look back and enjoy another project.

Thanks for the insight. Your right, my e39 and e36 have taught me a lot of hands on mechanics. Prior to owning the e39 I had a little 92 integra with crazy mods as well and thought I was the king of the road. But then there were times when I saw nice and clean bmws at stop lights or flying by me on the freeway, that made me desire a BMW more and more until I finally bought one. Till this day I don't see myself trading or buying anything else other than a BMW
