I do agree with this. My 09 328xi w/ iDrive built into the dash which I think is really stylish. The new navs look like their added on versus being part of the car. On the whole though? LOVE the F30 style.

I had an f30 loaner twice and was quite impressed with that engine. That car pulled like crazy. I wasn't too keen on the sound of it coming from my n54, but the little engine certainly does the trick. The smaller engine has less weight and keeps the car lighter in the front. When reading some initial road tests, many of the enthusiasts preferred the 4cyl 6MT over the equivalent 6cyl saying it was a better driver's car.

Seeing one comment from a magazine doesn't warrant a lousy thread like this bashing the new f30.

Eh, I don't think the thread is bashing so much as it's stirring up (what should have been) constructive conversation. Unfortunately, some people go into threads guns a'blazin vs. producing valid points and a fun debate. Everyone has their opinions I s'pose.

Show me where I "bashed" the F 30.

I praised it several times, I just quoted C&D saying it would loose a comparo to the E90.

Also you can talk about the virtues of a turbo four all you want but some people (including me) will always prefer an inline six in a sports sedan, especially since BMW is legendary for such engines.

Or a turbo 4 and an inline 6 could mate and you'd end up with a Volvo!

The turbo 4 in the F30 showed me the error of my ways. I have been a NA bigot my entire life, refused to ever consider owning a FI engine. Had a F30 for a week though and LOVED the engine. Pulls like crazy and is a ton of fun to drive.

It is not as smooth as an inline 6, but I can't say I even cared about that.

Peyton is gone? NOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I was pretty upset until Andrew Luck eased the pain somewhat.

Yeah, the 325i isn't the fasted car I have owned, but it is one of the nicest. I have been reading the posts of guys that have upgraded the intake, exhaust and ECU of their 325i's to 330i specs. I may do that once I get the body straightened out.

Clearly the guy needs driving lessons from a Furball. Sounds like a great reason to show up to C2C event!

Follow the Furball to learn how to drive

On a side note, I see this thread more of a "hey e90, yea you are an older model, but feel good, lots of people still prefer you". Like a 40 year old woman being told she is still attractive to some men

Will it be faster and more efficient? Surely. Will something be lost?

For those of us that have petroleum in our veins and revere the sound of a naturally aspirated inline six, V8 or even V12 engine, the answer is ABSOLUTELY!
Did you read the entire CD article? They praise the N20 engine. Here's what they had to say: "the BMW's 2.0-liter offers one long uninterrupted flow from the torque peak at 1250 rpm to redline. The fuel cutoff is past seven grand, and the engine sounds and feels like it's aiming for nine."

While it may not be a sonorous as the I6 N52, it's better in every other way. And I drive an E90 328i with MT.

Part of the feelings towards 4, is saying "I have 4" vs "I have 6". Bigger numbers sound more impressive, and typically are more impressive. Imagine they put the technology of the F30 4 cyl, into an F30 6 cyl. We know why they went down to a 4. Also, some of the engine note is made through artificial paths. Also, BMW and turbos..... well lots of people are familiar with those woes.

Hi Michael,

Yep, I read the entire article and if you read all of my above posts you will see that I noted that C&D praised the engine. I also posted that I have two 4 cyl sports cars that I love so I have nothing against a great 4 cylinder engine.

I just also like the smoothness and sound of an inline six and hate to see the 3 series lose what I consider to be one of it's greatest features.

I also said that I was certain that the F30 was a great car overall.

I just wanted to start a conversation about the changes and have a little fun. It's hard to judge tone on a web post, so I think some people misinterpreted my intentions.

That's how I took it but, with tone lost, sometimes you get this:

N20 is a nice powerplant compared to other euros. Take the MB I4 (250 moniker). Makes barely 200hp and that little thing is going in $50k+ autos.:what:

If I bought a F30, I would just lie and tell everybody it has a 6.

I've been lying about 4 being 6 for years now. So, no reason to stop at this point.

Either way, the size of the engine probably doesn't matter as long as I have forced induction.

I totally agree. It may not be smooth as butter, but the N20 is every bit a BMW engine.
