What is the USB port in gloves compartment?

Just found out there is a USB port in glove compartment. I wonder what is this USB port for? Can I hook the USB memory to this to play music or just a port to charge low current USB devices ?

You can do both of them.
I use it for my music library. Nothing beats carrying your whole music library in a USB. Now i can save my smartphone energy for more productive tasks.

I use a 4GB HP USB stick with my music. Works perfect.

I use a 2GB Kingston.
You could try unplugging your iPod and only plugging in your USB. Remember that the car reads only common music formats such was .MP3

The USB in the glove box is only for importing/exporting music into/from your collection (CD/Multimedia -> Music Collection -> Options -> Music Data Import/Export). You can't play music directly off it which is why it's not showing up as an external device nor can you use it to charge external devices (there's a warning about that in the owner's manual). However, you can play music directly off a USB stick inserted in the console and it will show up as an external device. I don't think you can have both an iPhone/iPod and a USB stick plugged in at the same time in the console. Also make sure the flash drive was formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS.

That is only true for cars with CIC (2010+), in my 2008 I can play music from my USB, connect an iPod and play music, or use the AUX in for music. Cars that don't have CIC do not have a hard drive to import music to.

+1! I have a 64gb in my 2008 e60. Aux port will accept up to 20k songs in Idrive selection under aux

If I remember correctly the CIC has a 10GB drive for storage and NAV maps.

Thanks, I stand corrected. An import/export feature wouldn't make much sense on a CCC-based system without a hard drive.

I think you need to have Video In Motion enabled (only available on CIC cars) to do anything like that.

You are correct, it is basically the hard drive based navigation system that BMW has used since 2010 models (2009 in Europe), it's the same iDrive system that the F10 cars have. rior to CIC there was CCC which is DVD based NAV and no hard drive.

Not Worth The Effort

Loading music to the hard drive is nearly a waste of time. I just plug my iPhone into the cable in the arm rest compartment and play music from it. The good news is it charges the phone at the same time.

Took me about 15' or so to load my 4.5g musik to the hard drive. What if someone don't use the Iphone or don't have iPhone. Just load the musik to the hard drive then done . you dont have to worry of plug in and take out everytime.

Another option for music using the aux cable inport (easy connection to phone when in/out of car) to stream Spotify.

My favorite is using a thumb drive in center console USB port. I suggest using a USB extender cord so that thumb drive is not damaged in rigid USB port

I thought about a music blue tooth connection for my phone but had to buy $60 hardware.

if using thumb drive in the center consol (armrest) does it play directly from the thumb drive or need to import the music to the onboard hard drive first? I wonder how big the hard drive came with it. Is anyone know how to find out ?
