There was never an M version of the E36 touring. check the VIN# if the first three letters are WBS than it is indeed an M car. If the VIN starts off with WBA it's an ordinary 325i touring and someone stretched the truth a lot.

If you post up the last 7 digits of your VIN we can decode it for you.

if the car started life as a 323 it would say 323 estate not m3 estate and u cant change it from a normal bm to an m3 on log book i know its an m3 from south africa and very few limited amounts were made as ive just read an article on them but it only states saloons and coupes in the article not estates it was imported in 1999 and was prduced in 1998 just wounder in has any body heard of these before really and how many are there

Um... We just gave you three separate sources all verifying that your car started life as a 323.

Argue all you want, but I'd say that the log book is the one factor that is wrong.

The VIN doesn't lie. If it were an M3 it would have WBS as the first three letters of the VIN. I'm not saying you got taken, but it is NOT an M3 regardless of what the logbook says.

Every single one of these poss agree. 0 E36 M3 tourings were made.

There may well be a one off in the BMW museum, but it was never sold as a factory option. Ever.

The VIN is from the factory. If a VIN does no start with WBS as stated above, then it was never an M3.

There was no such thing as a 2.5 L M3 motor. End of story. Your "facts" are completely false.

As for M3 motors built for lower emissions it simply doesn't work that way. If a car won't pass emissions, they don't get sold there.

Prime example is California. Catalytic converter's in the USA are sold in 2 styles: 49 state compliant, and California compliant due to CA's far tougher emissions laws.

he tried to troll some unsuspecting forum into believing he had a "rare" M3 touring, got called out, and is now back peddling. Thanks for coming out.

Regardless, if it's running and in good nick (I've watched too much Wheeler Dealers! lol) it's well worth the 500 quid.

The log book would say what ever the person who printed it typed.

I have a printer in my house too.
