Transmission Oil Pan

I know that this topic has been covered several times, but why does BMW not make a pan out of metal? Plastic over time tends to break down faster due to the heat from the oil. Also, is there any parts supplier that makes a metal transmission oil pan?

I think that you would only change the pan once in the life of the car, so I doubt it!!!

I don't think so, but Yorgi should be able to confirm this.

Everything is going plastic for weight saving reasons, so I think it will be plastic, I had it said to me at a BMW dealer that this failure is common right across the range of models, 3-5-6-7 series. But centered on 5-6-7. It also may have something to do more with automatics as they hold some 9.5ltrs of oil in the total system and is different chemically to the manual transmissions which also hold a lot less oil ??? The oil probably operate at different temperatures again ?????

Nope, thankfully no plastic pan on the manual gearbox. Everything on the manual tranny is metal and you just need to remove a few drain bolts.

From experience, I believe that automatic transmissions do operate at much higher temperatures than manual transmissions. That explains the reason why most, if not all automatic cars have an AT cooler.
