X3: Tire and Rim Insurance

I've had not so great luck with flats the last couple years, so I went ahead and took it.

How bad?

Two tires and a rim in three years - on a car on which I had only put 3,000 miles a year.
My X3 should get about 9,000 a year since I'm going from three cars down to one and a motorcycle so I'm playing the odds.

BMW Wheel & Protection warranty I purchased for my 2013 X3 xDrive 35i.

Had a 2004 X3 3.0 earlier that went through a set in around every 35,000 miles plus at around $1,000 a set for Pirelli Scorpions. Then once had a damaged tire sort of close to when I would have gotten new tires and would have liked to driven a bit more, but decided to change all four then. I guess the point was if I had the extended warranty I wouldn't have had to agonize over the lost money and tread wear? It was weird because I suspected it was punctured on purpose but didn't have any real proof.

With the 2013 X3 3.0 decided to get the 19" wheels and the car comes with the Run-On-Flat Goodyears. Not having any experience with that tire, and concerned when Road & Track or someone broke a long term test BMW 19" wheel through their typically rough driving, thought I would cover myself or at least ease my concerns by getting the warranty.

Have 6,500+ miles on the car in five months so drive a lot, hit a lot of potholes, etc. so at least it does the "ease my concern" part and otherwise haven't had any problems with the tires and wheels so far - I typically drive around 13,000 miles a year and the X3 is a key component of my livelihood as I drive to see clients several times a week with 60-100 mile round trips being the norm.

Purchased it.

would anyone pay $2k for 5 years for TIRE & Wheel Insurance ?

I live in NYC and got the tire 5 year for $1500 for my 19 inch rims. It makes me enjoy the drive more instead of worrying everything I go over. Just for the piece of mind it was worth it.

Did you get it from BMW Dealer when buying new car or else ?

Did not buy ... instead I self insured myself - bought a second set of similar oems wheels + tpms and new rubber as standby at 1/3 cost.

Yes I got it from the dealer when I bought my car new

For my 369 M-Sport wheels and tires that would be about $350. I doubt I could purchase one tire + rim for much less than that. Also insurance I got through dealer covers BMW snow tires and rims. Jury still out if I will come out ahead or not.

Yep - They are standard 306 style- 17 " wheels and Bridgestone run flat tiires - Got them at 1700

Did not buy it. I am careful to avoid potholes. I've had very few flats in my lifetime. I'll take my chances.

I wasn't planning on purchasing it. I did not get it with my first BMW and when I ordered this one I told myself I was not going to get it.

But when I was sitting there signing the papers on pick up night for some reason I changed my mind. Now that I have it I am happy I do, nice feeling that I don't have to worry if I can't swerve to miss a pothole and take a tire and wheel out.

peace of mind at $1500 not worth it on X3, may be on F30. i have bought tire warranty many times and now i will not buy it, i will pay if it happens not before. i lost too much money for peace of mind.

I had to get it, because there is too much pot holes poping up around or near my town.

i was told they do not cover curb damage. that was the main reason i was going to buy it. In the end, I didn't and it worked out better. I had a minor incident at the airport and the wheel got scraped. The dealer has a wheel repair guy onsite. It is only $150 repair.

It doesn't cover cosmetic but they will fix or replace if rim doesn't hold air. Unless u buy the "upgraded" wheel and tire package which would cover cosmetic damages.

It happen just now. Only 1month 4days old. So annoyed. Damn NYC construction. Only about 900 miles on it too. I would be cursing up a storm but I have tire insurance. What a waste of a perfectly good tire. Now I have to waste time at the dealer.
Tire insurance isn't for everyone but living in NYC is a necessity for sure. I really am shocked I need to claim it so early.

I'd like to get some, i travel a lot and i reckon the odds of me getting killed - injured are far higher then average.

Id like to hear what type people have and why
