Completely normal (albeit frustrating). For laughs, place the fob beneath your chin and use your head as an antenna, you can amuse yourself & on-lookers to see if that might extend the fob range.

This definitely works. And a bald spot would allow for up to a good 250 yard range!

A new battery in the fob (if equipped) should help. Interferences in the air can limit it's operation also.
