Car Rental in Italy?

We are looking to rent a car for about a week in May to drive from Verona to Tuscany and then drop off in Milan.

Any good recommendations for rental companies in Italy?

Would love to get an Audi A3 or an Alfa Giuletta.

I often fly into Milan Malpensa/Linate and drive a rental to Bologna. Autoeurope and Kemwel have worked out well for me. CDW insurance is required in Italy and none of my credit cards will cover it.

I have had nothing but bad luck with Hertz in Italy. Whoever you use, read all the fine print on the contract and give the car a thorough inspection before heading out - cell phone pics of damage are useful. Italy used to require an International Driving Permit and may still do so but I normally don't bother.

I would echo dkreiedel's insurance comments. Whoever you rent from, I would strongly recommend getting full coverage in Italy. Italy sometimes feels like it is not as "first world" to me as Germany or France; renting vehicles there falls into this category. Rent from a reputable company, and get full insurance. Also, depending on where you are specifically driving, smaller is often better than bigger; there are some very tight, narrow roads and streets there.

I contacted my Visa signature issuer and they cover CDW even in Italy. Check with your bank.

I've found that Autoeurope does not have a car fleet but is like an aggregator that gives you quotes from other companies and I've sometimes been able to book cheaper directly with the car rental co. For this April the best quote I got was from Budget and Avis. Also, it's usually cheaper to pick up at non-airport location, and often no charge for drop off at different location.
