Top off engine oil with Mobil 1 5w-30?

My E93 is low on oil (iDrive says add 1 qt) so I call the dealer and they said I have to make an appointment to get an oil top off

So I'm just going to do it myself... I have a case of Mobile 1 5w-30 which I use for my other cars. I read that the factory oil fill on my BMW (car has 9,000 miles so still has the original oil from the factory) is Castrol. I assume Mobile 1 and Castrol blend is ok? I don't think it is an issue but I don't know if the BMW oil has any special chemical that may cause problem if blended with another synthetic.

Your car requires BMW LL01. Only use oil meeting that spec (especially important if in warranty)

you are probably not far from an oil change, adding one quart of normal synthetic will be fine.

Mobil on 0W-40 meets the LL-01 spec and anyone who sells the 5W-30 will have it too. Just use that.

My owner's manual clearly states that it is OK to top off with a non-BMW brand oil...and further states that "BMW recommends Castrol." I've also used Mobil 1 5W-30 to top off in the past.

On-line owners manual states that up to 1 qt of non-BMW spec oil can be used if it meets the API SM spec.

for mobil 1, it should be 0W40 not 5W30. although for a top off, it should be ok, just be aware that M1 0W40 meets bmw specs while the M1 5W30 does not, so for a full change, M1 0W40

I don't think that's true at all.

Your oil cap says to use Castrol.

BMW doesn't refine their own oils, they buy it from oil companies like Castrol.

Maybe its time for you to read your manual and figure out what the BMW LL01 is for.
They don't refine their own oil, but like any top end auto manufacturer they make oil standards for their vehicles.

But I believe it uses Germen Castrol as the BMW oil not the US version. Auto Zone carries it in some stores & its labeled Made in Germany on the bottle. That being said if you can't get Castrol get Mobil 1.

An interesting thing happened at my last service, I noticed on the invoice that the engine oil used was Liquid-Moly that happened to be BMW LL- 4. Of course my Indie thought he was using the correct grade but I had misgivings about this and contacted the account manager for Liquid-Moly and he confirmed to me that BMW LL- 4 is designed for diesel engines. He advised me to take it back to the shop and have it changed with BMW LL-1 as soon as possible. After much communication my oil was changed for free and they are now using LL-1 on all petrol BMWs.

The better question is why you haven't changed your oil for over 9k miles? Just change your oil and call it good. Just because BMW says to change it every 15k doesn't mean it's a good idea (it's actually insanity if you ask me).

It's a lease... Not my problem after 30,000 miles.

I change my own oil on the cars I own, Mobile 1 every 5,000 miles... that's why I have cases of that stuff. I stock up at Costco when they have the $10 off coupon (like this month!)

So anyway... for the benefit of someone searching for the topic later, I was suspicious that the car really needed 1 qt so I topped off the car with 0.5 qt Mobile 1 5w-30 and remeasured and it was near to the max (was at min before the top off). So basically, if I had added 1 qt as the car had instructed, it probably would have over filled.

The car says oil change is due in 1,200 miles and I know the dealer will do the change once it is below 1,000 miles. So we won't be driving around with the mixed oil for long.

That's what I understand it to be, too.
