Bmw5series

I tried to put the plug key into the ignition and it would not click in. It just fell back out in my hand. But the weird thing is the engine started and the key is in my hand. This is not a car that is just a push button. It requires the key. I continued to try the key but it continued to fall back out. What happened????

The locking mechanism that holds the fob in is either jammed or broken. I let someone alone drive my car recently and something similar happen. Seems they removed the fob without pushing in to release it. It would not go in, though mine wouldn't start the car. I did notice when I gentlely put the fob in, it was not going in all the way. I gave it enough force that it did click in and started fine. All has been well since.
