Burnt 530i

So I was out of town for the weekend and came home to find my 2001 530i had spontaneously combust. It looks like the pass seat is where it started. My whole interior is trashed, called BMW na and they're supposed to be sending investigators. Look it up on the Internet, there are thousands

Here is an assembly of links to get you started:
- Heated seat fire burn on the BMW E39 (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) & how to diagnose and fix broken wires in heated seats (1) (2) & a front heated seat retrofit DIY (1) (2) & how to add rear heated seats (1)

I would recommend you report your seat fire to the following:
- How to report a BMW safety problem to the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration for a product recall (1) and what E39 safety repair problems have already been reported to the NHTSA (1) & BMW E39 ignition coil recall information (1) & the safercar.gov recall search engine (1) & how to find out if your BMW E39 is involved in a recall (1) (2) (3) (4)

Please let us know what they say at NHTSA because most people do not take the time to report these things - which is a detriment to all of us.

I have noticed when pushing the control to move the bottom of my driver seat back, it sometimes stays pushed back. I am wondering if this is what causes the motor to burn up/catch fire.

I had to change both rear window lift motors because they both burnt up, with the smell and all, with a short time in between. You could smell the motor and when i took the door apart it was very hot like it was running for hours. inside the motor it was burnt to a crisp. No other damage apart from the smell that took a very long time to go away.

BMW na towed my car to the local dealership so they can have an investigator check it out I'll let you know what they say when they call me. Just curious how much something like this would cost me to fix just in case

For the record, this thread shows the results of a fire, purportedly from charging the battery:

OP- Do you have seat heaters or not? Not sure if that would even matter. Looks like it started from the control buttons.

This is why when I am on vacation, I disconnect the battery from the car(s) to:
1. prevent battery drain
2. prevent fire like this.
