"Dont steal gas"...

Woman ordered to wear sign declaring her crime

SALISBURY, Maryland (AP) -- A woman who stole $4.52 worth of fuel was ordered to stand outside the gas station Friday wearing a sandwich board sign that declared: "I was caught stealing gas."

Sherelle Purnell obeyed the court order, although by the time she arrived 90 minutes late to her noon sentence, the crowd of people that gathered to watch her had dispersed.

"There were parents who came with their children, wanting to teach them a lesson," said Jan Phipps, manager of Gordy's Tiger Mart, which pushed for the unorthodox punishment.

Purnell, 18, who was caught on surveillance tape speeding away from the gas pump, walked along the convenience shop's grassy storefront as passing drivers honked horns and made catcalls.

Andrew Black, who stopped by on his lunch break, was critical of the punishment and converted an old beer poster into a sign protesting high gas prices.

"What is this, the Middle Ages?" said Black.

Purnell declined to comment.

Some passers-by considered the punishment to be a good deterrent.

"Embarrassment is the best way to deal with these things," Randy Jedlicka said.

Awesome! "What is this, the middle ages?" WTF is that fool smoking. Would he prefer sending her to jail and wasting thousands of tax payer dollars over 4.50 in gas? F-ing tool. I like "alternative" punishments.

Deduct 55cents from the City koffers for this quarter. So much for the pothole repairs.

in the meantime, the guy who murdered his wife got off scott-free on a technicality

ps: if it were the middle ages she'd have been tortured on the rack and then had her eyes burned shut with a red-hot iron

Living in CA my whole life I've never encountered an in-state gas station that lets you pump and then pay. I was shocked the other day to read that gas theft is becoming a major problem. but rather than going to a simple pay before you pump approach the gas stations in some states are talking about making people get a gas card from within the station? WTF?

What also shocks me: the people WANT to go into a gas station. If the pump doesn't have a credit card slot there, I'm moving on to a new station.

And paying cash for gas? Huh, I have various mileage cards and spend $60 a week on gas. That's 3000 miles I'd be surrendering if I paid cash.

Weird world...

Wow, and I thought the fervent crowd was going to impose street justice by torching her with gasoline.

At the prices these days I would at least make it worth my while! 2 gallons of gas, Jeesh!
What does that make her time worth? Most of us know what we're worth an hour. Her day of punishment cost her a bunch!
When I try it I'll have to ask the judge if I can bring my cell phone, daytimer, and portfolio-at least I'll get some work done.
$4.52?? weird.
