Post 4 Series Spied with Less Camo Taking a Break Next to an Audi A5

BMW 4 Series Production

BMW is letting some of the camo go from the upcoming 4 Series and we were able to get a peek at what is underneath while this 435i sat next to a Audi A5. We have seen the Concept Coupe and have all been wondering what will make it through to the production models this July -- based on these photos it looks to be missing a lot of the more extreme treatments that the concept had.

BMW 4 Series Production

While a good number of things are either missing or still hidden by the camo, it is reasonable to believe that the "lines" may re-introduce some of the key concepts from the Concept Coupe. BMW is heavily invested in the lines concept and going more aggressive with the M Sport line makes a ton of sense.

BMW 4 Series Production

What do you think? Are you still as excited about the design at this stage?

Boy that bulging hood just looks odd at certain angle.

If the rear exhaust and diffuser is close to production level, maybe the front lower vents will be tuned down from the concept too.

Still like to see less camo at the front. When do we expect to see the full reveal?

Hoodline looks like a huge nostril...front looks good still. Side is odd. needs to be lowered.

I'll wait to see the real thing before I formulate my final opinion, but I'm less interested in the coupe than I was before when seeing pictures of the "concept 4 series".

The front end with hood transition is hideous and looks similar to the Dodge Charger.

There's still camo on the vital areas but it in my eyes, it is trending more towards "predictable F30 2-door" instead of "new, sexy, exciting 4-series." Not that that's a totally bad thing...more a move from "Yowza!" to "Cool."

the bulging hood and tallish green house look weird on a coupe. this kind of just makes me think the A5 just looks really good.

How dare BMW move the coupe 'upscale' and give it Halogen lights. I was really hoping an LCI Coupe would be my next car too.

It's kinda ironic that the e92 was a bigger departure from its 4-door sibling (e90) than the f32 is shaping up to be from the f30 (based on the spy pictures so far). Yet, BMW Marketing will make everyone believe that the 4-series is somehow more special than what used to be the 3-series coupe.

The A5 looks sleeker, while I seem to like what I can tell from the "4er" proportions (IMO nobody is doing better proportions than BMW right now, their true calling card).

I don't mind the taller roofline/greenhouse of the "4" since BMW previous "3" Coupe's always had this kind of 3-Box "Sedan with 2 Doors" presence that still could look sexy. The modern-classic E46 Coupe and E36 Coupe especially spring to mind in that regard (the shape of the roof and silhouette give me impressions of those). However, it's a fine line when doing a Coupe like that, it has to have be done right, or else it can look too upright which works on a statelier/larger presence of a Sedan, but goes against the theory of a "Coupe".

I'm liking it from the A-pillar back; that high roofline looks pretty good in my opinion (but I do drive a 1-series and love it so make of that what you will). But that hood... it's awful. I understand the pedestrian impact stuff in Europe, but man that thing just doesn't look sporty. I agree with others comments that it looks pregnant.

Still, it's possible it's just the camo messing with perspective... like the 1-series I think I'll have to see it in person before I really "get" it. I had exactly that problem with the 1'er at first; I didn't like the proportions of it (especially the rear) until I got to actually walk around one and look at it from a lot of angles... it clicks in person in a way that pictures can't portray. I don't know why... it just does

I like this. Normal front and rear fascia, not Bondesque frills from a concept that need to hide a machine gun. This is pretty obviously X-drive and it still sits where standard F30 sits, so 20 mm lower for standard coupe suspension is going to look really, really good.

Yes, during my ED in a brand new E92 the only cars around that were catching my attention were A5s. That car looks awesome. Give credit where credit is deserved.

in this video the hood doesnt look as bad but could just be the lighting / angles

i agree that in this pictures, the hood looks heinous. seems like every single current E92 owner hates the hood. I have not heard one person say "wow that hood looks nice". Get a clue, BMW

It also looks big by comparison, and almost like this is a picture of the upcoming 3 GT.

I agree,it's a total joke calling this a 4 series. It is one thing to not change the interior of the car but to have the same headlights as the F30 is ridiculous.

The real star of this picture is the A5. It has been over 6 years now and that friggin car still looks badass. If I were Audi I would run that design out 18 years like the 1972-1989 Mercedes SLs. On those rare instances when you have perfection, no need to change. I'm sorry 4 series, go sit next to something like a C coupe.

Actually, the real star is the pic of that M3 above your post...I would not have minded seeing this get an 18 year model run (or at least have a run at an 18 year old model):

I hope those halogen headlights don't make it over here on the F32. I'm still trying to understand why one has to buy xenons to get projector lenses in a BMW. You can buy $15k Mazdas and Kias these days with halogen projector headlights that look at lot more classy than what we see here. If the idea is that BMW will sell more xenon headlight upgrades by making the base headlights look as terrible as possible, it doesn't seem to be working from what I've seen so far of F30s. The E90 LCI had better halogens which included corona rings.
