Pics of Stealth Radar Detector Install

Well, something is wrong with my digital camera (probably just had the settings wrong--these digital caeras have gotten so complicated). The bad lighting in my garage didn't help either, but here are some blurry pics of my recently installed Escort SRX radar detector/laser shifter.

As far as the appearance goes, I'm VERY happy with the way the whole install looks:

Pic 1: The display is set up where my front ashtray was. It's fitted in with a black flush mounted plate. IMO, it looks very clean and OEM.

Pic 2: The lid closes down over it, and you'd never know I even have a radar detector.

Pic 3: There is also a small LED that is installed on top of my steering column. Under normal driving conditions, it is a green solid light. When a radar source is nearby, it flashes red. The stronger the signal, the faster it blinks. If it is a laser source, it lights up solid red.

Pic 4: There are two laser shifters at the front of the car, one in each opening for the fog lights.

Pic 5: There is another laser shifter at the rear of the car, over my license plate. This is supposed to be under my license plate, where it is very unobvious, but I only had two license plate screws at the time. When I put on my real plate, I'll move it down underneath.

Pic 6: The radar detector is mounted just behind the front mesh grill on the lower lip of the car. You can't see it at all unless you're about 2 feet away. Right now, it is mounted at the bottom of the grill opening, but I'm probably going to move it up to the top of the grill for better range.

As far as the performance goes, I'm a little disappointed by the range. I get about a half a mile warning, so I can't waste much time. With an Escort 8500, I got about double or triple that warning. While it is enough for me to react, I'd prefer more. Because I can set my display to display the frequency of the radar source, this allows me to react very quickly as to whether there is a real danger, which minimizes the problem of lack of range. I think that it'll help by raising the detector up 6-8 inches in the mouth of the mesh grill. I might also try to move it closer to the grill, as well.

The good thing is that I get very minimal falsing, even in the city. I have not had an opportunity to test the laser shifting capability, but when I do, I'll post a description. Overall, I'm very happy with it, and I'd give it the following ratings (on a scale of 1 to 10):

Accuracy: 9
Range: 7
Appearance: 10

Sorry again for the crappy photography. Here are the first three:

I'll be looking forward to your review of the laser shifter. I've been thinking about getting one...I'm running into more and more of our public servants using them. Nice install. I'm not worried about being all stealthy about it. I've never been hassled for having a radar detector nor have I ever heard of anyone else being hassled. So if I get a shifter, it will just be an add-on to the 8500.

Doesn't the shifter need to be flat for a proper field of view?

Oh, also, your radar range would probably improve a LOT if you moved the sensor up to the kidney grilles.

Very nice!

I was wondering, if an Infiniti FX with an Intelligent Cruise Control, (http://www.infiniti.com/content/0,,c...-32005,00.html) comes from behind, SRX gives back a false distance information and ... ,just wondering.

MysticBlue-

I got the stealth install not just because of law enforcement, but also to hide it from potential thieves. Here in Houston, and especially in my area of town, automotive break-ins are pretty common. I didn't want to give anyone another reason to break into my car. I'll let you know how the laser detector works as soon as I get a chance to test it.

Nick-

The laser shifters don't have to be perfectly flat from left to right, just from front to back. The line from front to back can't be more than 5 degrees off of parallel from the ground. Also, that is a good idea about possibly putting the detector behind the kidney grill. I'm definitely going to look into that.

JB330Ci-

I've been wondering about the SRX's effect on active cruise control. I've been thinking that if I see an FX or new Mercedes, I'm going to watch out for that. This question was posed on another forum, and no SRX owners had had any experience with this. I can see it now: I'm driving down the highway, and an Infiniti FX closes on me from behind with it's active cruise control on. My alert goes off, and I hit my breaks while my laser shifter simultaneously employs, resulting in a nasty collision...

Thanks everyone for all the comments.

Hi,

First, excellent job!!! Very professional looking....

But I do have a question for you.

I see that you mounted the radar display where the ashtray is. Aren't you worried that looking down to see what is being displayed (and it's strength) might create a dangerous situation? I've always seen people try to mount the display at least within the line of sight. But in order to look at the ashtray area wouldn't you need to completely take your eyes off the road.

That's a good question, but pretty much the only time that I actually look down is when I first get the alert. The display gives me the frequency of the radar source (law enforcement only use a few specific frequencies). If it's not a threat, I immediately ignore it and return my eyes to the road. If it is a threat, I still immediately return my eyes to the road and search for the source of the threat, while listening to the instensity of the alert beeps and glancing at the flashing LED on my steering column (the frequency of the flashes corresponds with the strength of the signal). So my eyes are only off the road for a split second while I initially check the frequency number of the radar source.
