335i glovebox usb, but not in center storage?

I just bought a 335i 2009 which appears to have i-drive v2 (single dvd drive in console, music RIP option in navi which has split screen). After some research i discovered i have a usb port in the glove box, but none in the center console. How costly would adding the center usb port be? Is there a diy or am i looking at heafty stealership pricing? Any tips/advice/links would be very most appreciated.

On a side note, I find voice command doesn't understand what im saying most of the time. I have no accent and speak clear english, so if anyone has some tips there as well, i'd love to hear them.

I have never seen a center console USB addition if it didn't come that way from the factory. I expect it would be pricy. I have one in my (non-IDrive) 2009. It was a specific option that had to be added to allow playing MP3s from a USB stick (it was option 6FL, the "iPod and USB adapter", $365).

I have voice command on mine. Used it for the first 6 month to a year, then got so tired of having to repeat myself at a full shout that I haven't used it in the last 2.5 years.

It's actually the 4th generation iDrive but who's counting?

Search this forum and on E90Post for "combox retrofit." That should get you started. It is neither easy nor cheap and a dealer typically cannot help you. (In general, any kind of electronics retrofit on a modern US-spec BMW requires a good supply of ingenuity, bravery and ready cash. It's easier in Europe, for all the good that does you. )

Use good, clear diction. Speak at a normal, moderate pace; avoid slurring words but do not over-enunciate. If you have a high error rate and your normal speaking voice is somewhat high- or low-pitched, try changing your pitch a bit. By "no accent" do you mean no foreign accent (i.e., that of a non-native English speaker) or no regional accent (e.g., deep South, New England, Chicagoland, etc.)? Both can be problematic--the system works best with a truly neutral accent. Try to sound like a Nebraskan. Irregularities in vowel sounds and syllabic stress can trip it up (often with comic effect).

Also important: Minimize background noise (close sunroof & windows, avoid max fan speed on HVAC blower, etc.) and avoid stray sounds (such as coughing/sniffling, throat clearing) while voice command is active.

I've never had anything to do with retrofits. I have USB installed from the factory. But, a quick google search revealed the attachment.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. Im bummed out that its gonna be something unnecessarily hard. Ill keep looking at options, but at this point, i think the DVD mp3 disks + leaving my phone in the glove box for long trips will have to suffice. As far as the accent, you raise a good point, however, i have no "colloquial" american accents, if that makes sense. Anyway, i've already pretty much resigned myself to using voice command for nothing more than switching modes. Appreciate all your answers guys, what a great forum!

Don't worry! Soon you'll start having all the other repair issues that the USB thing won't even come to mind!

Anyone with a hobbyist's knowledge of electronics can knock this together for a dollar or two in parts. Not an understatement.

But....do your want a thumb drive stickin' out, ready for damage? 'Course there are button USB drives, now 15 gb+ -- yeah, there's a solution. Nice li'l LED to feed ya back, too.

If you START HERE, you may open the doors of perception to a diff reality! Good luck to ya!
